Favorite Soundtrack Albums #2 - Shaft

Why am I posting this at 1:23am? Because I might not have time tomorrow, due to my plan to watch football all day. So good morning! We are at #2 in my Favorite Soundtrack Albums series: Shaft. With The Bar-Kays serving as the backup band, 1971's Shaft was an Isaac Hayes masterpiece, a double album (the first double album of original material ever released by an R&B artist, by the way.) Just how good is this record? It won three Grammy Awards, and reached #1 on the Billboard 200, a chart on which the album spent a total of 60 weeks. It also spent 14 weeks atop the R&B chart, and spawned a #1 hit on the Hot 100 with "The Theme from Shaft," which also garnered Hayes an Academy Award (first African American to win in a non-acting category.) The album was recorded in just three days at Stax Recording Studios, and is the highest selling album in Stax history. I've linked, not to the "Theme from Shaft," but to my favorite on the album, "Do Your Thing." It's one of Isaac Hayes' famous extended jams, and features one of my all-time favorite guitar solos. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I had no idea that they played him in the gay clubs. Interesting. That would be cool.

Isaac was good at those jams. Someone at the country music conference did a presentation on his 18-minute jam of “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.”
