An American associate professor of religion said that many people seem to view disasters this way: “Why God ordains such disasters is a mystery that is not ours to question. It is only our job to have faith.” Does God really “ordain” human suffering? What does the Bible say? Suffering was NOT part of God’s purpose for mankind. The Bible says at James 1:13: “When under trial, let no one say: ‘I am being tried by God.’ For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone.” The fact is that suffering can afflict anyone, even those who are favored by God. The prophet Elisha had a terminal illness: 2 Kings 13:14 The apostle Paul wrote that he continued “to hunger and also to thirst and to be scantily clothed and to be knocked about and to be homeless.” 1 Corinthinans 4:11 The Christian, Epaphroditus was sick and “depressed.” Philippians 2:25, 26 Nowhere in the Bible do we read that these three men were being punished for their sins or tested by God. However, the Bible DOES more than reveal who is NOT responsible for suffering. The Bible also identifies three basic factors that often CAUSE suffering. What are those factors? This is Part 1 of 4 posts that will explain these factors. I hope you will read all FOUR and please let me know what you think about this information. So many people really WANT to know WHY there is so much suffering in the world. Do you?
