Bunog is a kind of freshwater fish commonly found in the shallow parts of river, lakes and ponds. The fish usually grow up to around 4 inches when maturity but can be harvested when it reaches 1 inches. Have small grills but its fleshy specially the upper body. There are many recipes for bunog but ilocanos usually cooked this as pinaksiw or cook in vinegar with onions, pepper, salt, ginger. This is common recipe because its a fast cook dish. It can also be fried. Ilocano style frying is when cooked as paksiw. Because children don't like the paksiw so the parents fried this to suite to the interest of the kids. Grilled is also a good option and then added to dinengdeng and coconut milk dish. I took the photo and I cook the dish.

The unique taste make it one of the favorite in our region. And rarely this can be seen in the market because villagers usually sell this house to house.

It is a great photo but I am afraid I will pass on the fish. I can only eat fish that is coated in batter or breadcrumbs. Please do not ask my why. I know it is totally illogical.

We don't eat fresh water fishes. We are blessed with marine life that's why. But I'd love to try it. I learned to eat milkfish, eel and tilapia only in Manila.

the fishes shown in your photo is what we call "tinangriban" or coral fishes and commonly found in our area also, its so happen this kind of fish are to bony and not fleshy. Speaking of eel, the freshwater eel is much better than the seawater eel and in our region, particularly in Pangasinan, the most delicious milkfish can be found, they call it "bonuan bangus".

going to the market today would be nice idea. we can always love the fresh fish to be in our meal and cook to our desired dish than canned fish which got different taste already because of the flavorings and preservatives.

it has no bones but because the fish is small, sometimes its just good to fry it so the bones can be brittle to eat.

yes, the dried or fried fish is the best for this kind of fish. Because its small so when this is fried, this really become crunchy.
