California Covered with Haze

The fires burning throughout the state of California, particularly in the Northern California wine country, have caused a haze to descend on most of the state. In recent decades, California has generally done a good job of eliminating most sources of air pollution. The sky throughout the state is usually a brilliant blue, unlike the brown haze we used to experience in the 1970s. Sadly, the pollution created in one week of wildfires has created as much pollution as all the gas powered cars in the state typically produce in a year. From Redding, California in the north, to Orange County in the south, much of the sky has turned a grayish brown. The air pollution in San Francisco this week is as bad as the air in Beijing. They even closed the schools in San Francisco last week due to the air pollution. Most of the schools in that cool city are not air-conditioned. It is such a tragedy to know that everyone is breathing this polluted air, even hundreds of miles from the fires, despite the fact that California has worked so hard to eliminate their former pollution. Sadly, these fires are going to take a toll on people for years to come.

Yeah, I remember reading about the pollution problem in LA back in the 1970s. They worked so hard to clear that up and now it's been undone by wildfires. So very sad.

I visited San Diego in the 1970s but I've never been to LA, although I remember articles about thw smog they used to have @DeborahDiane it's a shame those fires have caused almost the same pollution as was there in the 1970s.

@rebelann - When we would visit LA in the 1970s, my eyes would start watering and my nose would itch the minute we arrived. It is sooooo much better now ... or it was until the haze from the smoke arrived. So sad.

@rebelann - At least the pollution from the fires will go away. In the 1970s, it was hazy all the time. A friend of mine said she lived in LA for months before she realized there were mountains on the East side of the city!

I have read that there are more and more people evacuated, this is a terrible event, it will take a long time before everything can be back to (almost) normal.

@LadyDuck - I feel so sorry for all these people. They must be overwhelmed.

@LadyDuck - Over 100,000 people have been displaced by these fires. Some are staying in shelters, some with friends, and hundreds are camping out in a field which has been made available. It has to be hard on all these people!

@JamesHxstatic - Yes, these fires have been terrible. They have them under control, now, but what a price a lot of people paid!

People and wildlife. That's sad the fires are causing so much pollution.

@just4him - Yes, I believe that we have just begun to see the impact of the air pollution. Many people will get sick in the future because of the current air quality. Animals, too.

@DeborahDiane It seems they have found more bodies since the last time I heard and I guess it is highly likely that even more will come to light as they clean up the area.

It is a very sad and unhealthy situation. They had the same problem in Oregon with smoke. A friend in Boise years ago mentioned how difficult it was to live with the smoke and fires in the mountains. Burning and smoke from anything always irritates my eyes, nose, and lungs. The worst pollution I've ever seen was not in Beijing, but in Xi'an, China. As we approached, the sun seemed to have disappeared. It looked like a very cloudy day, but it was all due to the pollution from the factories.

@DianneN - Oh, my! It is hard to imagine how people live with such polluted air as you saw in Xi'an. Of course, as I write this I realize that millions of people lived in cities in the U.S that were extremely polluted in the 1970s. I'm so glad the air has improved here. I'm sure people live longer because of it.

However this bad air will dissipate and go away far quicker than manmade smog.

@JohnRoberts - That is true! I'm glad it isn't combined with the old smog we used to have. The combination would be toxic!

Thanks for updating us about this situation. I have some friends living in SF, but knowing them, they won't tell me anything until things are over.

@YrNemo - San Francisco closed their schools late last week and the schools will still be closed on Monday. The reason they are closing is because of the air pollution. It is pretty bad up there, but at least they are safe from the actual fires.
