Favorite Band Names #3 - Gaye Bykers on Acid

I took nearly two days off, but we now return to our regularly scheduled programming: my Favorite Band Names series. We are at #3: Gaye Bykers on Acid. The third of three Grebo bands in this countdown, Gaye Bykers on Acid were formed by bassist Robber Byker and vocalist Mary Byker in Liecester, England, in 1984 ( the band claims that "Gaye" was intended as tribute to the legendary Marvin Gaye .) The "dirty, ugly Bykers," as the Trouser Press Record Guide called them, were famous for a couple things: the vinyl edition of their 1987 debut album, Drill Your Own Hole, came sans center hole, so that you literally had to drill your own hole in order to play it (luckily, I only owned it on cassette and CD.) They also released albums (and opened for themselves) as Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeds. I got to see Gaye Bykers on Acid in England in 1989, when they opened the Reading Festival. They played a very brief set, then spent the rest of the festival wandering the grounds terrorizing the crowd with a bullhorn. Years ago, when I wrote about music on Epinions, I had an email correspondence going with Robber Byker. Nice fellow. I've linked to "Rad Dude," from their 1989 album, Stewed to the Gills.
