This is pineapple sage. It has a slight pineapple flavor and in the fall it has these gorgeous red blooms.
Oh, and this is also a Monarch butterfly, headed south. My red pineapple sage makes a perfect filling station for the long journey. Every year thousands of Monarchs head for Mexico and Central and South America. It is part of their life cycle.
The image is mine, taken today, October 20, 2017.

I worked with someone once who was recruited to go out and count them near her home.

@JudyEv I cannot imagine, but she took her teen boys and they did it. I am not sure if it was just for a certain time period, or what.

You capture it good while clinging to the flowers, just the right time.

She was so busy feasting it did not bother her to have me near.

Lovely! I've only seen one monarch this year, at the old place before I moved. My front yard was filled with flowers. This one was filled with weeds, which I've been vigorously discouraging. I hope to have more flowers next year, and then maybe I'll have more butterflies.

This is the first I have successfully grown it. I believe I have had pineapple mint in the past. Someone told me to infuse pineapple jam with the leaves of the sage. I may try it.

@GardenGerty That sounds like it could be a really nice jam. Great for Christmas and has a sort of Christmassy feel about the flavours.

I feel incredibly fortunate. I am also glad to be helping provide fuel for their journey.

Was I not lucky? I need to cut and dry some of this pineapple sage.

I did get lucky. This year my pineapple sage was in a different place and it has not bloomed. On the other hand the butterflies have enjoyed the cinnamon basil and all of the mints, and some red portulaca.
