WINTER BLUES - OR FUN?

Here in the Caribbean throughout the year we enjoy warm, hot, or mild temperatures throughout the year, therefore indoor and outdoor activities remain the same and there is no change to heavy clothing. However there is a slight dip in temperatures between December and February which would necessitate warmer clothing at night, but we find that coolness very welcome. These following questions are for the members who live in countries where there is winter - five or six months of the year: How do you spend those long winter evenings? What outdoor activities do you usually engage in - or do you prefer spending time indoors? and finally - What do you like best about winter?

Here in Alabama it does not get as cold , we at times have a snow shower or a freak blizzard but I go outside daily, I walk the dogs and tend to their needs, I work out in the yard clearing and cleaning because its easier in the winter. BUT February is our real winter here at its coldest. I hate the cold and would love to live in a year round warm place. Being stuck inside with snow and freezing outside would drive me insane!

I suppose that is one of the reasons why January and February are our best months for tourists from North America.

there are plenty of things to do.Skiing, sledding, winter sport. Though it get cold but we New Englander are used to this. For us we have theater, movies, etc.Never boring. It is what you make of it. I for one could not stand the warm or hot weather. Many rush off to Florida. To be warm. But not us.We can well afford to get a place there or any warm place. We loved it here.

It is the same here in the southern parts of India where the weather remains constant and is predictable. The only change comes during monsoons . I visit my daughter in Switzerland and the last time it was in March , when it was biting cold ,wet and dark all through the day. No wonder people are very Hardy there ..

For one thing - it is less expensive - no winter heating or winter clothes to think about.

When I was young, here in Canada, we did skating, skiing . We loved the snow then, but today is a very different story. I prefer to stay indoor.

And these days staying indoors can be much more interesting than it would have been back then - I suppose.

Here in northern Europe it depends on the winters. Nothing you can do about the very long dark nights but some winters bring lots of snow and some hardly any. This year since after my husband's passing in August and I am all alone if we have a bad winter then I will just be snowed in and will have to deal with that.

Those are good questions I wish I knew as well. It does not get that cold here but when it gets down to 4 or so here which is not very cold compared to what those north and northeastern states of the US get I like to stay indoors where it is warm. I do know a lot of the people here like to go skiing in the winter since we do not get snow very often here.

Well, at least there is one thing. I also like the new year celebration - such anticipation and hope for a better year ahead and also being thankful that I am still here to witness the dawning of a new year. Life is so unpredictable.

I get more saddened when it's so hot and humid I can't stop sweating. Summer is my season of hibernation. Those who live close to the poles can enjoy the auroras, at least. Here we have four seasons of three months each, so the questions aren't targeted to me.

We get an icy wind and sometimes black frost during our winters, but no snow. We tend to use free standing heaters and hot water bottles. And we stay indoors more.

Fortunately I live near London so we do not get bad winters like we had when I was a child. (They do up north) When there is a lot of snow then we tend not to go out much as the roads are chaotic. It is fun to play in the snow and make snowmen, have snowball fights but as you get older this is not the same. We used to go to the hills and sledge down them as a child using our mothers serving trays were great especially the metal ones which used to glide over the snow! I remember not being able to stop myself and having a terrible accident cutting my leg quite badly. I still have the scar to this day! But kids are very resilient. I am coming to the Caribbean next month and looking forward to it very much, nice warm sun!

That's great - winter is the season when the Caribbean sees a lot of tourists from Europe and North America. And unlike during the summer - there is no hurricane threat.

I love winter. As a kid I was outside all the time. I would sled down the hill across the street, go ice skating in the park, throw snowballs and have snowball fights. I would try to catch a snowflake on my tongue when it snowed. I also enjoyed hot chocolate when I came in from the outdoors. I even ate snow. I loved it. I still prefer winter to every other season. I think the memories have a lot to do with it. When it snows, it puts a smile on my face. I don't go out as much as I used to, or engage in those activities I did as a child, but I do love watching those activities. To see kids sledding on the hills, skating in the parks, and just enjoying the season, is my new fun. Christmas also happens in winter. People put up decorations on or around Thanksgiving and turn on the lights and decorations on Thanksgiving, so you can enjoy them throughout winter, as many displays are up throughout January and sometimes into February if the weather doesn't allow for owners to get out and take them down. There is so much to enjoy about winter. I do still like a cup of hot chocolate as I'm watching it snow.

We experience winters here in New Delhi from the month of November to February. March month brings the season of spring. During winters we love to bask in the sun during afternoon and we enjoy eating peanuts and dry fruits in winters. We get opportunity to wear pullovers, coats, jackets and blazers during winters. However, too much cold sometimes becomes uncomfortable. Weather remains pleasant through out the day so whenever possible we love to go outside.

@Kandae11 I think you get occasional and rare spells of cold and they are temporary. Do you have have jackets/pullovers in your stock to face such kind of weather?

@dpk262006 I think everyone here does. You see - sixty percent of the population have relatives living all over the world and they usually send home barrels of clothes and other items for their families back home. Of course those who can afford to can purchase whatever they want from the stores.

Yes, too much cold can be uncomfortable. Because we are close to North America - we sometimes get very cold spells lasting for two days or more during December, January or February --then jackets or pullovers would be necessary.

We do not exactly get winter like most of our country, but still can get pretty cold here. Usually, nothing changes as far as our activities. Just might dress warmer and adjust to there being less sunlight.

@Kandae11 Indeed, in day time usually not get colder than 45 where I live. Usually in mid to upper 50's to 60's in winter time. Night can, gets below freezing maybe 7 to 10 days a year. On average would say 38 to 45 degrees at night.
