The strelitzia or bird of paradise

A friend gave me a bunch of flowers recently and included among them was this strelitzia, more commonly known as a ‘bird of paradise’. These are perennials and native to South Africa where they are also known as ‘crane flowers’. Their image appears on the reverse of the 50c coin. One of the five species can grow to 10 metres tall. Other interesting points are: • It is the floral emblem of Los Angeles • Two of the species are popular as house plants • They are pollinated by birds which sit on the stout spathe from which the petals emerge. The weight of the bird opens up the spathe releasing pollen onto the bird’s feet. They are certainly a very lovely plant. The photo was taken by Vince.

@LadyDuck @garymarsh6 Arum lilies were introduced into Australia as garden plants and are now a noxious weed. However they do look beautiful scattered throughout the green paddocks in the wetter areas.

There is a huge bird of paradise in front where I live. Big as a tree.

Some species do grow very large apparently. I've only seen the smaller ones.

@silvermist Here's a photo of a crane. I suppose it looks a bit the same. Photo from Wikimedia. Thanks. It's easy to see why it is called a crane flower, isn't it?

Beautiful flowers. I must go look on YouTube™ for a video of how Strelitzia is pollinated, sounds complicated.

Let me know if you find a link showing/telling about it. Wiki says there is no natural insect pollinator and if there are no birds the plants must be pollinated by hand.

@pgntwo Wow, there is some incredible footage there. I'm not very keen on bats but they look funny little fellows.

God was in one of his most creative and humorous moment when he made that plant. One could meditate on life and God by just looking at that strange flower.

@YrNemo After all, who could think up an animal like a camel or a manatee? Maybe he had a committee concoct those for him!

The first time I ever saw a strelitzia was my girlfriend send me some flowers at the hospital over 20 years ago. I was shocked to see such a flower.

It is very unusual isn't it? Not your normal 'daisy' type of flower.

When we lived in Monte-Carlo Sterlizia were in every garden, some plants and flowers were taller than a man, I think very old plants.
