Someone asked me a bit about Diwali and I came up with a summary of what all is celebrated with all my knowledge and without looking up wikipedia. So let me share it and want feedback from those who know more on this than me: Well the festive time is as follows(and dates this year as they were): Day -2: Dhanteras(17 Oct): Worship Goddess Laxmi and Money(Hindi: Dhan) God (I thin his name is Dhanvantri or Kuber but have to confirm): People buy Gold/Silver ornaments/coins/small objects or stainles steel stuff(like glasses/bowls/plates etc) Day -1: (18 Oct this year) (Also known as Choti(small) Diwali and Naraka Chaturdashi- Chatur: 4 and Dash : 10: 14th day of Moon cycle just before the Amavasya or the new moon day(dark night)): On this day, in some Southern states of India, they celebrate full and final Diwali- may be due to traditional and religious reasons. In other parts, people prey to Goddess of wealth - Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha- the one who clears our path and is the son of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati and is revered and prayed before starting a new work. People also meet and distribute sweets. Day 0: Diwali (19 Oct this year): Festival of lights and signifying the victory of light over darkness Day +1 (20 Oct) : Goverdhan Puja: worship of the hill Goverdhan: which Lord Krishna lifted with his hands and saved his village folks(Nand Gaon or village) from extreme rain and thunders. Day +2(21 Oct): Bhai-Dooj: Festival where brothers and sisters meet and pledge to protect each other. There are meetings, lunch/dinners and fun time.

How very nice to know your festivities. Are those festivities , celebrated by the people by preparing foods? Here, every nice occasion is celebrated with a food, evern if it is just a simple stir-fried noodles and juice.

@SIMPLYD indeed food is something that people relish during festive time. At times though, we tend to overeat.

@SIMPLYD Yes and we have various kinds of sweets- many deep fried, but some like Rosogolla and Coconut Burfi are somewhat healthier. And we have people gorging on spicy and oily stuffs as well. Some cannot control their taste buds and suffer from constipation, acidity afterwards and often have to take medication.

@hereandthere I am sorry- my mind went a bit in distracted mode- Dooj does not means sister but means applying a Tika- vermilion mixed with rice on brother's forehead! And the festival signifies strong bonding between brother and sister.

by the way, a mylotter from nepal also shared a pic of the rangoli he and his sister made. here:
Rangoli designed by me and painted by sister. We make such rangoli in front of our door to welcome the god Laxmi (god of wealth). We call that day as Laxmi...
