I worked some on bringing in houseplants over the weekend. Then of course there are herbs I want to bring in in pots. Some are already potted, like lemon grass and sweet basil, but there are others that I may dig up to try to keep for the winter. Freezing temperatures are not due until Friday, so I should be able to get it done. I am thankful to be able to check the forecast and see how to plan ahead.

Lemongrass is strong, but basil does not survive the winter freeze.

Lemon grass does not survive the winter here, either. I know many people who bring in pots of basil. I have even rooted some cuttings in the past.

Many herbs are strong and make it through the winters here where I live.

It seems that the Lemon grass and sweet basil can't suffer a cold winter.Do you use them to season food?

@changjiangzhibin89 Yes, I have heard in Italy that they use basil planted or bundled near their doorways to keep flies away. Lemongrass needs some tropical weather. I had thought it was pretty common all over Asia. I know it is often used in stir fry dishes served in "Asian" restaurants in the US. I also know they are not necessarily authentic.

Yes, I do. I really like basil in many things. I like lemon grass in tea and some in vegetable dishes. It helps keep mosquitoes away, too.

@JohnRoberts This morning, in the chilly dark, that sounds good, for about ten minutes. I hope no players got heat stroke.

I had some ginger root that I did not use up. It grew sprouts, so I have it planted. I am leaving the rosemary and the standard sage outside. I have a few philodendrons and of course my kalanchoe I bought the other day.

Meanwhile it is still hitting the upper-80s/low-90s here in California. I hope you're able to bring all your plants and herbs in to protect them from the freezing temps.

It is easier on the plants to get them in before you turn on heat.
