Anybody involved with Professional Baseball, or simply anybody who likes Baseball can recognize the name Jose Altuve. They would tell you that he is the all star second baseman and leader of the Houston Astros. They would also tell you that he has been the Average Leader champion batter of the American League in 3 of the last 4 seasons and that he is the fifth player in Baseball history with 4 consecutive 200+ hits seasons. What probably not many fans will mention or even know is that Jose Altuve is the shortest active player in the Major League Baseball. He is only 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m). This is not a minor detail, considering the tendency of the sport has been increasing the size of players, looking for the taller, strongest and fastest super baseball player. According to Beyond The Box Score, the average size of the Baseball Player has increased 7% and the average weight has increased 14%. This tendency was not very encouraging for a venezuelan boy born in Maracay, Venezuela, on May 6th 1990. Belonging to a generation dominated by taller and stronger athletes in every sports discipline, it was difficult for Altuve to be taken seriously at first within the pro Baseball world. He was reported by scouts to have the talent, the will and the discipline for the game, but lacking the basic physical attributes and strength required by MLB organizations. What did Jose Altuve do? He worked harder and proved them wrong. Now, in 2017, Jose Altuve is one of the two top contenders for the American League MVP (most valuable player) award. He already received the Hank Aaron award for the best hitter in the American League. He is considered the leader and captain of the Houston Astros: a team that is currently playing the World Series against the LA Dodgers with a great chance to win it all. Jose never surrendered his dream of playing baseball, and being a professional baseball player. He never payed attention to the many telling him that he could not make it due to his characteristics. He kept working and dreaming to a level where he did not only become a professional Baseball player, he also became one of the Very Best to ever play the game. A person cannot change certain facts about themselves, but a person can always persevere, work hard, ignore destructive critics and keep dreaming. Jose Altuve is a living proof of this.
