The Colour Purple

The lovely purple coloured flowers are home to one of the most expensive spices in the world.
And in the process , purple gives way to the colour saffron.
But then saffron is the colour and also the spice. The thread like stigma of the purple crocus flower are dried to produce this exclusive spice. A few strands mixed with milk gives a golden yellow colour to the food.It also gives an distinctive aroma to the dish.
This spice is cultivated in the North West corner of my country. All family members pitch in during harvesting and it is back breaking work. A huge quantity of the purple flowers are required to produce just one pinch of the spice.

Great colour for flowers and anything else
Sheb Wooley released this single in July 1958 and it hit #1 within 2 weeks and remained there for 6 weeks. This is the original version -- hard to find these...

@responsiveme Yes I get that. I was just wondering if the saffron can be obtained from yellow or white crocuses too.

The crocus is purple, the saffron comes from the stigma of the flower which is orange red.will check out if I can post a pic

I've heard of that spice, but never used it or had it in food, so I've no clue how it tastes. If I had to help harvest those crops, I'd take a chair of some type and move that around so I wouldn't have to be in a back-breaking position for too long. Wouldn't that look funny?

@responsiveme Before I got my first knee replaced last winter, I'd garden from a chair a lot. It saves the back especially when one knee has no more bend anymore. Once I get the second one done next summer I hope to be able to stoop a bit more to ease my back that way. If it's still tiring, then I'll revert back to the chair.

That looks so beautiful but it certainly sounds like a hard job to do. I had no idea that saffron came from the crocus. We grow purple crocus in our yard, I'll have to look it up and see if we can make our own saffron..
