Driven Away from the Republican Party by Mass Shootings and NRA

I am registered as an Independent voter. I have always been proud of my non-partisan stance. For decades, in the states where I have lived of Texas and California, I have voted for both Republican and Democratic candidates, based on who I believed would perform the best job. My husband has been a life-long registered Republican for the entire 46 years we have been married. However, we are both tired of living in the only developed country in the world where we and our loved ones are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence! My husband has dropped out of the Republican party and joined me in registering as an Independent. After watching one more mass shooting, we have reached our limit. I told him I would never vote for a Republican again as long as the party continues to put the NRA above the safety and lives of the people in this country. To me, voting Republican in today's climate is the same as saying that I am OK with the idea of a mass shooting every month in this country. Has it really reached the point where Republicans no longer even care if people die from mass shootings? Do they consider these shootings to be acceptable? Are they really fine with this state of affairs? We are far more at risk of dying by being shot by a white male in America than we are of being killed by a terrorist. I am sick of it. Until the Republican Party changes our laws, requires universal background checks (including at gun shows), bans bump stocks, assault weapons, large capacity cartridges and silencers, I will not vote for them again, for any office, at any level. I hold the entire Republican Party responsible for these shootings. I would prefer to vote for no candidate than vote for a member of today's irresponsible Republican Party. Much to my surprise, my lifelong Republican husband now feels the same way. We are DONE.

Oregon Governor Tom McCall is the only Republican I could have ever voted for. The party has been in the pocket of the most wealthy since at least Herbert Hoover. Never have they been champions of progress. The NRA wields far too much influence in this country.

@DeborahDiane I would too. It would be interesting to know what steps that church has taken or what changes have been made in the last few years and especially the last few months.

@DeborahDiane They really are. I would hate to feel as if I needed to be armed all the time.

@JamesHxstatic - Unfortunately, we moved away 17 years ago and I lost touch with most of the members I knew. Some of my friends attend other churches in the area and I have never heard them mention armed guards, but they may not have thought much about it. It certainly feels as if the world is moving in the wrong direction. I feel safe where I live and spend my time, but I believe a lot of people in the US feel very insecure.

@sallypup - Thank you! I am glad you feel the same way. This bloodshed has got to stop and the only way to make that happen is for ordinary citizens to take a stand.
