We tootled to the cinema last night to see Suburbicon. My goodness, it was good. I do enjoy a bit of Matt Damon. It's a George Clooney and the Coen brothers film. A bit dark, ironic and twisted, funny and sad, with a lot of uncomfortableness thrown in for good measure too. Whilst 1950s white, middle-class America gets its knickers in a twist over a black family moving into the neighbourhood, a few of them are indulging in the type of naughty which can see someone thrown in prison. As fences go up and the neighbourhood protests outside the home of the black family, murder and insurance fraud is going on in abundance just yards away. Interestingly, the dad of the unwanted family never speaks. Unlike their braying neighbours the family seem kind, educated and unwilling to get into confrontation, seemingly accepting that this is what they must endure. Despite the events of the film, they still remain calm and collected, whilst their neighbours seem angry and entitled. The main story focuses on Matt Damon's family and the aftermath of the tragic event which rocks them to their very core. The lovely little Noah Jupe {definitely a future star} plays Nicky, Damon's son, and he is truly amazing in the role. Julianne Moore is instantly unlikable as Aunt Maggie, but Uncle Mitch is so sweet. There is blood, guns, violence, racism, lust, swindlers, friendship and a tiny bit of rough sex. But despite this, it is darkly humorous. And the final outcome? Incredibly satisfying. Very incredibly satisfying.
