A Thank You Service

I am here in the Guidance office today. We were told to report for work for 8 hours even if it is Saturday, to assist in the enrollment. The guidance office is in - charge of the Admission Test for transferee and second course students. The sad part is that it is not charge as overtime or even an offset for absences or late. It is a thank you service. Their reason is the 3 day non - working holidays declared by MalacaƱang, here in the Philippines. I know it is against the Labor Code but we can do nothing but to follow what the School Administration has ordered. Do this same thing happens to your office too?

Luckily, I am not directly connected to a company. I can manage my own time. Yes, I had experienced the same situation. And I am the first who is against it.

That's the good thing of having a business. You don't have to follow orders from anybody because you are your own manager or boss.

No. Such things are not allowed here particularly with Colleges.

You're lucky you have not experienced it. This is the first time that I have experienced this. In the schools where I previously worked, they really follow the Labor Code. but this school where I am in now, they ignore the law...

I doubt it happens in my office. You are getting the short end of the deal there.

@magallon if it happens again, best that you insist on getting paid the right amount or at the very least get a extra day off or extra leave credits.

That is sad. My mom is also a teacher there in the Philippines and since she teaches in a public school, the district ensures that they receive the right compensation and holiday pay when called to work beyond their normal teaching hours. I know it is hard to challenge an employer in cases like this, but by saying nothing it sets the tone to the administration that you are okay with working without pay. Hopefully it gets resolved soon; if not, I hope they do not pull something like this again.

@magallon my mom also started her teaching career in a private school. And yes their compensation and benefits is not as good as those in public.

Public school teachers here have no problems when it comes to compensation. In fact they have higher salary now compared to other teachers in some private schools. We hope too that this will not happen again. This is the first time since i joined this institution.

that is illegal, if i may say. any activity done when there is no office, is considered overtime. it should not be your responsibility to give your services for free because you 'have to buy your own food'.

@magallon just like the school where i work. i told the dean that we should be considered full time employees because we work for more than 24 hours a week. i have a brother who worked in NCMB and he said that we should have the benefits of full timers as well

I so much agree with you. I know that our school management know s that it is illegal but they ignore the law. And they are thinking that nobody will report them.

You are lucky because you are paid for your extra service... I think I have to look for a better company. the one that really pays the services of its workers.

What does a "thank you service" even mean? If it's against the labor code then it's obviously not right for them to do that to the employees.

That is a shame you do not get paid overtime. But I guess it can be thought as the greater good because these students are in need and it is important for them to get what they need.
