The Lionesses: Women Veterans' Memorial

This memorial, just unveiled yesterday in the neighboring city of Springfield, OR, are meant to be symbolic of women vets, past, present and future. The center lioness represents the future veterans looking ahead with hope and strength, flanked on her left by one representing women vets of the past, remembering sacrifices, bearing scars. The snarling lioness on the right is for women veterans of the present, ready and willing to serve, to fight if necessary. Underneath their paws, all five branches of the the US military are represented with the rock for the Army's boots on the ground, a rattlesnake for constant readiness to defend, an anchor for the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. A falcon in flight represents the Air Force and African violets around the base represent hope and togetherness. The memorial is quite impressive. I wish the photo could be larger. I am glad to see women veterans recognized. Are there any women vets writing on myLot or daughters, sisters of vets?

@CoralLevang and @just4Him are both veterans. I was in the Navy as well. That sounds like a marvelous memorial. I want to see that if/when I get out west. All we have locally is a little sitting garden at the VA hospital with a sign that says, "She served, too."

@FourWalls, James Higgins She did huh, that is not much credit to give for the sacrifices. It is a very fitting memorial here.

My mother served in World War II. I will have to look this up and go next summer to see if my mother's names is on there.

@jstory07 I guess because it was designed as a memorial to all women who have served, are serving and will serve in the future.

Yes, it is an impressive monument. Thanks for the mention. @CoralLevang did too, also served in the Navy. The funny story about that is we both served in the same command, at different times.

How very nice. Thanks for sharing. This is great. We have an entire park that is for our veteran's. Veteran's Memorial and a parkway is named after it.

@JamesHxstatic - What a cool memorial to women vets. I love the concept. I wish they would make copies of it and put it in VA cemeteries or similar locations around the country!

Yes, there are not enough memorials to the service of women in the military.

@DeborahDiane Wellll... what woman would be without those items? That is a riot. I know that women pilots ferried planes cross country.

@JamesHxstatic - I think our members of the military, of both genders, need to be more fully recognized. I saw a WW II woman pilot interviewed on the news. She said they were told they had to fly better than the men, and they always had to have lipstick and a comb with them on their flights! Even the elderly woman who was sharing her story was laughing about those ridiculous instructions!
