Another Boo-Boo

My 11-year-old cat named Frankie had a vet visit this last week and he's got Glaucoma. Now as with humans, there is no cure but in order to keep their eyes from popping out of their heads (from the pressure behind the eyeballs), you have to give them two different eye drops three times a day for the rest of their lives. Friday and Saturday went well but on Sunday morning he decided to sink his teeth into my thumb and web (between the thumb and forefinger) of my left hand (the one that holds the eye open). Needless to say, he didn't get his drops and he's lucky to be still alive. This happened at 8 am and by 2:30 pm, my entire left hand was swollen so bad I couldn't even rotate the thumb. Apparently his teeth speared my tendons. Sooooo, I got a hot, wet wash-clothe and applied it for while. Then ice and some triple antibiotic ointment and I wrapped the hand up. This morning I removed the bandaging and the hand is completely swollen to the wrist. I can rotate the thumb somewhat, but still. So not only did he not get his other two sessions of the drops but none this morning either (since you can't do it with just one hand). I'm just glad I'm right-handed. Geez!!!

I know right? Dang cat @arthurchappell . I don't know why he was so dang cooperative before and then.....Although I guess if I was blind and someone came up to me and started messing around, I'd probably bite them too.

The vets other suggestion is to remove both eyeballs through surgery @amadeo . What is the point and cost of that? It would be more humane to put him to sleep.

I am so so sorry. My cat would not let me take care of her either. I pray everyday that she stays healthy.

@Hannihar That's what a lot of people don't understand too is that without the Momma teaching them things, it deprives them.

@nanette64 My cat since I got her has been like that. She was left to die at 2 days old and a family found her and kept her till she was 3 months old and then I took over. I cannot say how it was with the family but she has always had trust issues or felt that way. She did not have a mother and sibling cats to teach her how to behave.

Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't start to get any better you should go see about it.

Yeah. An antibiotic would be cheaper than watching a red streak going up my arm @Happy2BeMe .

I have said many times - the only pets I can deal with would be fish in a fish tank. Are you sure you don't need antibiotics?

You got that right (fish) @Kandae11 . As long as it ain't a baby shark. I probably do need an antibiotic. I'll see how it goes for the rest of the day.

Since your cat seems to have regular visits with a vet, I expect he had shots and all that? Over here, most cats (and dogs, etc.), strays and even pets, don't have shots. So when someone gets bit, it is pretty automatic that they should get shots for rabies. I don't know what the protocol would be if someone is bitten by a pet that has complete shots, though. In any case, I hope your hand gets better soon, and it won't be anything serious. Take care! Please do consult a doctor.

Oh goodness, I am so sorry, I have glaucoma and I had laser surgery, the only treatment that helps in order not to put drops in your eyes three times a day.

Ouch. Sounds like he really hates getting the eye drops. I hope your hand feels better very soon or Frankie would think he got away from the eyedrops for good!

Oh no! OUCH! I hope your hand is healing by now, otherwise try to go see a doctor? I have been giving drops to Daisy for a muscle she pulled and she doesn't appreciate it either.

What I did was open the puncture holes and started pushing all the poison from the hand and thumb through the holes @bluesa . Then applied more triple antibiotic cream. As of today the swelling is completely gone. The only thing that still hurts are the puncture wounds. And yeah, our critters just don't appreciate our due diligence. LOL.

You'd better see a doctor, you can get some really nasty and even fatal infections from a cat bite!
