Do Native Americans Celebrate Thanksgiving Day?

For most Americans, Thanksgiving day is a day of celebration and feasting. As a Filipino whose country, the Philippines was also colonize by the US and who grew up on Hollywood John Wayne western where the "Indians" were depicted as the bad guys, this distortion of history should be given some moments of reflection. Historical data on the number of native Americans wiped out after the arrival of early Europeans are estimated to be as high as 90% of the population during the period of colonization. Even today native Americans still experience socio-economic disparities and discrimination. That's gratitude for helping those "Mayflower" pilgrims weather out the early days of survival in the wilds. As the Lone Ranger's sidekick Tonto might say, "Happy Thanksgiving kemosabe" Photo image: Wikimedia Commons

@topffer _Maybe in the spirit of the holidays it will receive a presidential pardon from Trump. BTW, is Turkey included in French cuisine?

I think to the Native Americans every time I read about Thanksgiving. Those poor people surely have nothing to be thankful for. If they would have sunken the Mayflower they would still enjoy their lands. Now a question, what should Europeans do with all those immigrants from Africa?

@josie_ In Italy Italian kids are already a minority in school. In some cities there are only 2 Italian kids on a class of 28 immigrants. It's not working well at all.

@LadyDuck _ I think history will repeat itself. After the immigrants birth rate overtake the Europeans and they become more populous they will be a major faction and win in elections. Political power will eventually be held by future descendants of these immigrants. Let us hope European's policies of integration and assimilation of Muslim immigrants works. Else your future generations might find themselves the minority under the crescent flag of Islam.

@LadyDuck _I find it hard to believe. Perhaps you mean there are more immigrant children in the public educational system while most Italian parents prefer to enroll their kids in private schools?

That's an interesting question. I watched the video. I wonder how many white Americans know the origin of the day.

Like many historical inaccuracies which we were told during our young school days, this Thanksgiving myth should be corrected.

There are material information available in the internet about the atrocities European settlers in the new world inflicted on native Americans.

I agree that we should definitely acknowledge what happened to the Native Americans. I find it so sad, I can hardly think about it.

History is said to be written through the perspective of the victorious, never on the side of the losers and victims.

If the native Americans could have seen their future, they would have sink the Mayflower pilgrims. That was their fate. I wonder if they were thankful after that.

@thelme55 _The role of the Christian religion played a major part in the fate of native Americans. Just like in the Philippines when the Spaniards came to these island. In one hand they held the Bible and in the other hand the sword.
