Second Thanksgiving

Today my family celebrated a second Thanksgiving, since none of us could make it on actual Thanksgiving and my mom had to work late that day anyway. Second Thanksgiving was a success. The food was, in my opinion, way better than the meal my in-laws served, but maybe I'm biased about my family's cooking. The candied yams in particular were the best I ever ate; my sister made them this year and added coconut and walnuts to them, in addition to brown sugar and melted marshmallows on top. Everyone agreed that they were delicious. I had a big serving and now, over six hours later, I am still stuffed. It was nice getting to visit with my parents and my siblings and their significant others. We listened to this goofy Christmas album my brothers recorded for my sister when we were younger and all had a good laugh over it. I think that this was possibly one of the best Thanksgivings we've ever had together (even though it technically wasn't Thanksgiving.) Usually my family ends up fighting on the holidays so it was nice to enjoy one for a change where we all got along. (Maybe because it wasn't the actual holiday!) The only downside to the day was my partner decided to stay home, so I brought him back a plate of leftovers. I was also sent home with a ton of pie. We now have pie out our ears over here. It would have been nice if my guy had joined us, but I understand why he didn't. It's his weekend and he didn't want to spend it hanging around my dad. They don't really get along. Other than that, it was a great Saturday. I hope my family makes a tradition out of having a "second Thanksgiving" either before or after the actual day. That way I can still carry on the tradition of seeing my in-laws on the holiday, but celebrate with my family too. How was your Saturday? Did you do anything special?

That is one of the best memories I bet. My father used to tape record our voices when we were kids. I hope we still have those tapes. Happy Thanksgiving. It is nice to always give thanks!

I hope you still have those tapes too! I love going back and finding recordings from when my siblings and I were little. Thank you! Yes, I agree!

Thank you! Eh, I get it. It was his weekend and he didn't want to spend it around my dad. (I don't blame him for that.)

@Courtlynn We've been together long enough by now that I know how he is. And I'm not going to make him spend his day off doing something he doesn't want to do. When I was younger I might have gotten mad over it, but now I just shrug it off because it's not worth the fight.

Many years ago when I worked in retail, we always celebrated a second Thanksgiving to ensure that I got to eat with family. Because I was always stuck working the actual holiday, my family would gather on Thursday for the first feast, and then usually Thursday or Friday we'd all gather again for the second feast (when I and anyone else who missed Thursday could join in).

I think it's a good tradition to ensure nobody misses out. I really hope my family keeps doing it so I can spend the holiday with them as well as my in-laws. I hate always having to choose one over the other.

@Srbageldog The one thing I love about Thanksgiving is that there is no right or wrong way to celebrate it! Whatever it takes to get family together, that's what's important!

It is so nice that all of you still celebrated thanksgiving even if its not on the exact day. What matters most is you and your family made time for it and catch up with each other. Right?

I am so glad you had a good time, you deserved it. Yes I got to stay home all day, I did not have to leave for nothing and that felt so good.

Sounds like you enjoyed a wonderful family get together. My Saturday was ordinary.

Well, at least ordinary usually means nothing eventful (or bad) happened. So that's good.
