Cars and budgets ... a realization

File under: things I have just realized. Owning a car isn't simply the purchase price of the car. Of course this is evident in things like buying the gas to make it run, and in buying your license plate tabs yearly. However something I didn't realize until recently is that as a mechanical item - cars break down. You can count on that happening. Now it is good to be as prepared as you can. Sometimes you can save yourself a great deal of money simply by being able to do a few simple things. But there will be other times when your car will require you to spend money on it's repair and maintenance. It would be wise to budget out some money just as one does for the more obvious car ownership costs such as gas and license- save some money aside for repairs. Enjoy this song which seems totally appropriate:

@FayeHazel Do you mean Kokomo that the Beach Boys sing about? If so it's a place in Florida, or so they say.

@Courtlynn That's a pretty good deal. Depending on where all you go - could be cheaper than gas and mileage on oil change, tires, etc

Cars are an expensive luxury, not a necessity to own, unless you live out in the sticks. If you live in a big city or town, you should use public transport. If you own a car and use it purely for pleasure, then it is probably spending most of its time in the garage or parked up somewhere. Dump the car and treat yourself.

@FayeHazel If you live in the sticks, then yeah it's tough if you haven't got a car. Only other thing would be to car share, but that comes with another set of problems.

@Orson_Kart Ah yeah... too many opportunities for disagreeing I think there... but a good idea in theory

Ah, I'm afraid that I do live "in the sticks". Actually in this small town I can walk to whatever I want - usually do provided I have time/am not buying a lot of stuff. But if I want to see friends or family/go out and do much of anything -- then driving is a must. We don't have the best public transportation around here... maybe in the largest of cities it's better (likely)

Love this song! Yes, a car is always going to cost a person, and none of my friends know how to fix a car. Budgeting is a must. :)

Car repairs can be very costly. They are usually unexpected as well. Always at a bad time. Love it the Chuck Berry song. Very appropriate and I enjoyed it

Yup, they cost more than I care to think about at times. When your living (barely) check to check it's hard to save money. It's a good idea to save money when you can though.

I agree with you. Plus spare parts for certain cars are more expensive than others so even it breaks down once it can cost a lot of money.

The cost never ends, and just gets worse the older the car is.
