Is It True?

My husband likes to tease our five year old grand daughter Sandra. Last week the clippers were at the back door waiting to be taken out to the garden shed. My husband picked them up and started to trim his fingernails. He then told Sandra that usually he only used them for his toenails...but because he couldn't find the fingernail clippers he had to use this today! Once grandpa was off to work, Sandra came to me and asked.... Are those really toe nail clippers? Grandma...they are soooo big. Have you ever told a child a tall tale and had them believe every word!

When I was a child, the elders used to say that if we have a wound, staple rice will come out from it. The elders wanted to refrain from bruising oneself and it is their old tale that passed on from one generation to another.

I had no children, so it was not my case, but I was told a tall tale that I believed. When I was 4, one of my uncle told be to bury a small pebble in a vase and to water it regularly, it would have become a mountain. He changed the pebble time by time with a one a bit bigger. I was so dumb to believe that story.

@Morleyhunt Yes, I realize I made two typos. I was so proud of my small stone that was growing.

I think you meant pebble (a small stone) I can see where a child would believe that story.

The innocence of children. It's done in fun. Really she knows that no one would use clippers like this for toenails...but watching grandpa trim is fingernails made her question it.

I think I just don't have the talent to make kids believe my tall tales. My husband does that though, sometimes.

The children do seem to believe the menfolk long befor the women. I wonder why?

Sandra is pretty clever. She asks grandma if the tales are true if she has any doubt.

I always do such things with my kids. Like last Sunday police was patrolling in our locality and my son asked why they are roaming here I said they have come to catch you as I have complained that my son is very and we are troubled by him.

I teach my children and grandchildren to respect police...not to fear them. Now the dog catcher is another matter...

It's a joke in our family from the kids to the grands that whenever Papa tells a tall tale, the little one will turn to me and say, "Caca, is that true?"

@Morleyhunt I use some weird clippers for my toe nails but at least the clipper part is pretty small. I found out before I had my girls that young kids take things we say literally even when we're not telling 'tall tales'. I was assisting someone that did Sunday school with the younger ones and they were sitting on the floor. He was telling a story and said to himself 'let's back up a minute'. He then saw the kids moving backward on the floor. It took him a bit to figure out why they were doing that. They did something else that day related to what he said although after all these years I don't remember what that was. I've no problem with telling a child a tall tale, but I think I'd leave sharp instruments out of it. Mainly to eliminate nightmares if nothing else.

my father, when he was alive, told us siblings that "the leaning tower of Piza is perpendicular to Rome and Penablanca (a distant town)" . i believed that and i even imagined that in a globe where the tower is above the town. when we took up world history, i knew my father was fooling us.

I don't know if it's a good idea to scare them like that. What if they indeed tell some kid out there that these are toe clippings.

They enjoy each other's company. I think she knew he was teasing her. When he cut a finger nail she started to wonder.
