Favorite Manchester Bands #4 - The Smiths

Nope, absolutely no surprise here. Because I've never heard a band from Manchester, England, that I haven't liked, I am counting down my favorite Manchester bands. We are at #4: The Smiths. Led by guitarist Johnny Marr and vocalist Morrissey (bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce rounded out the lineup,) The Smiths formed in 1982, and lasted just five years. During that time, the band released just four studio albums, but were so influential on alternative guitar rock that they were twice nominated for entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band essentially formed when Marr, a fan of the New York Dolls, sought Morrissey, who had written a book about that New York punk band, showing up at the vocalist's house to invite him to join his group. (Fun Fact: Mike Joyce claimed to be on psychedelic mushrooms at his audition.) Much has been made of Morrissey's humorous, yet often morbid lyrics, at which he was quite prolific: A study claims Morrissey used over 1100 different words on The Smiths' first three albums. I have linked to a live version of The Smiths performing their 1985 hit, "How Soon is Now?" The video was shot from the audience, but apart from some occasional shakiness, both the video and the audio are good quality. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

There must be some great groups ranked ahead of the Smiths. Another absurd omission from the R&R HOF.

They were nominated a couple of years ago, and I voted for them in the fan vote. My contention is that "rock and roll hall of fame" should NOT just mean "bands who were popular in America." Just because the Smiths weren't as popular here as they were in the rest of the world doesn't mean a thing.

I wonder if they would reunite for it if they got in. They've turned down several offers to get back together.

@FourWalls - I voted for them too. They don't seem to like alternative music very much.

I loved this song when it came out and still love it. I wish I could explain music better, and I could tell you why, but I will just have to settle for loving it.

One thing that I think makes it appealing is it's undeniable dance groove, which was really not what they were about.

@teamfreak16 I never thought of that. I like that guitar where it's kind of a stretched out wailing sound. If that makes any sense, and his voice is amazing.

@misunderstood_zombie - That's another reason. Johnny Marr's guitar play is fantastic on this.

@teamfreak16 'How Soon Is Now' is a favorite of mine. I wrote a paper about the song back in college. Aced it and got an A+!

I thought the vocalist there was going to do a strip tease the way that he was moving.

I've really never paid much attention to his political views. Interesting. I totally would have pegged him as leaning to the left.
