A Woman Named Sylvia

This took place almost 40 years ago. I was reminded of it when I read a discussion by @BearArtistLady about Santa came early. I was attending a weeklong church event with my husband and two young children (2 years and 6 months). The last day I was on my own with the children. My teenage brother was to give me a ride home that evening...so almost everything had gone home with my husband the night before. Some days, parenting can be overwhelming. At lunch my six month old had an unfortunate encounter with tomato juice....now she was in her sleeper...the only clothing she had that was clean. Midafternoon....the two year old had an accident...diarrhea. It was foul..it was profuse....it was everywhere. She had no clean clothes...everything was dirty. I had my hands full with a cranky baby and now this. In stepped Sylvia....truly an angel that day. She brought my two year old to a the mothers room and washed her down. She had to clean her own clothing as well. Then she went to the tiny boutique next to the convention center and purchased a new outfit for my daughter...everything from the skin out. She would not accept anything for her kindness. I never knew anything else about her...but that day she was a shining star for me. When I insisted that she needed something...she told me to pay it forward (long before this was a common phrase). She told me someday I would see someone who needed a helping hand due to circumstances beyond their control. When that time came...I should just do what needed to be done and move on. Over the years....I often came home with less supplies than I left with...because someone needed something I could supply. This debt can never be repaid....but often when I see a young mom or dad, with their hands full I remember a woman named Sylvia.

What a wonderful story. She must indeed have seemed an angel sent from Heaven.

She certainly did. I was pretty close to tears when she brought my daughter to me.

@Morleyhunt What a terrible situation you were in at the time. Definitely she was sent from Heaven.

If nothing else...I learned the impact of helping someone out...first hand and as the one receiving the help.

She was a blessing to me and my children. I honestly don't know what I could have done. No clothes...no transportation ( I didn't drive) a teenage brother who didn't want to have anything to do with a niece that was foul....she saved the day.

That's a great story, Morley. I've seen different things of this type at work, but mostly it's customers handing over money when another customer is short funds. That doesn't happen very often though. A few years ago, a lady purchased a 500.00 gift card for our store and then left it with the cashier to use to pay for anyone coming through that line. Hours later, I took over that lane and there was still some left. It was an express lane otherwise it wouldn't have lasted very long. The things that Sylvia, and later you did to help others was more personable and made more of an impact.

Thank you. I don't consciously think of this often...but when I see a young mom struggling it comes back.

I love the story, so many kind people have made our heart grow with their kindness during the lifetime and we all do what we can to pass it on.

Just the fact that she was willing to deal with the foul mess...Even without dressing my child...made a huge impression. Most people just quickly move away...leaving the overwhelmed mom to deal with it.

@Morleyhunt I agree Sylvia was very special. I have heard that saying instead of paying her back if someone needs your help or needs help help them out or something like that.

It's called paying it forward. I try to do that whenever I possibly can.

@Morleyhunt True, there are plenty of wonderful people in the world and all of us have crossed paths with some of them. Unfortunately, we more readily remember all the jerks we have come across.

I think every one of us has a story like this somewhere in our past. We tend to bury them. Then something happens, or we read something that helps us to remember them.

What an endearing memory. She really was a good samaritian and helped you out, or paid it forward as we say today. I think that I would have done the same thing if I saw someone in desperate need like that.

@Morleyhunt You must have felt overwhelmed, I remember being at our in-law's and it was just our son, he was about 2 and he had what your daughter did. And it was everywhere, and wasn't that about the first time I let him wear underwear! Oh the embarrassment, as a parent I felt awful because he obviously didn't feel well and I looked really unorganized, a sister-in-law who had a son a few months younger had to loan me a pair of her son's pants. She belittled me and made a big deal out of it, I still remember it all of these years later.

I'm not sure most people realized the predicament I found myself in. It was a tad overwhelming. She saved the day. In a quiet way that left me with my dignity intact.

I think looking back, most mothers have an experience that seems similar.....at one time or another circumstances knock us for a loop. Thank goodness there are kind strangers or even people we know who can help fill our needs.

Your recounting of what happened to you is why I do what I do, from slipping five dollars to a homeless person to buying a Highway Patrolman's Starbuck's order. Plus it's a bit selfish on my part too. It makes me feel really good too. It doesn't matter if you're rich, or like me s draping by on disability, its the gift of the kindness in your heart. Its the joy it brings on both sides of the kindness. If more people could reach out with that kindness this could be a much better world!

So true. Those little acts...not asked for, no fanfare...just general kindness goes a long way. I hope you have some good news about your situation, very soon.
