What makes a meal

How many food groups do you have to have to feel you have a meal, not a snack. It can depend on how you were raised, or what your culture says, or your preferences. I know many who are just "meat and potatoes" people. I want a protein food, a starch, and a fruit and a veggie and a beverage. So, meat and potatoes, and applesauce and Brussels sprouts and coffee, or milk, or water. Tell me what makes a meal for you.

Any particular one thing? Meat, veggies, bread?

@GardenGerty It depends on what I am hungry for. It does not matter what the one thing is.

Do you eat anything with your rice? Are your dishes mostly savory or sweet? I like rice but cannot eat too much of it.

@GardenGerty Our dishes are not too savoury with both meat dishes and vegetable dishes.

At noon a dish of pasta makes a meal for me. I eat the fruit one hour after the lunch and I only drink water while I eat, an espresso coffee after lunch.

@GardenGerty I never eat the fruits immediately after the meal, the acidity of the fruits slows down my digestion.

The evening meal must be heated in order for me to be happy. Yes, protein, usually beans of some sort here or maybe a fake meat patty, noodles or some such, veggies like mushrooms and onion and green pepper then a side vegetable. Last night was very tasty: home made mushroom soup, (almond milk in it for protein and taste), asparagus, home bread, avocado and refried beans smooshed for a spread. Fresh pear to finish.

Just about anything makes a meal for me. I don't really mind what it is.

I probably would eat less if hubby would. We usually have the meat and starch, he prefers potatoes, and I want us to have at least one fruit or vegetable or both. Sometimes it is a one dish meal with all included in a casserole.

We grow up with lots of side dishes. So it's the soup for us and then the main course which includes rice and side dishes which must have vegetables, fish, and meat. Then we have our desserts.

I like to eat lots of different things. A nice salad one night and meat and potatoes the next night.

A huge salad would be a meal for me, protein or not. A couple of veggies that fill a cereal bowl. A bag of dill pickle chips can be meal.
