What are your Christmas traditions? I’m looking for ideas

Yesterday I read a post by @LoriAMoore of how the tradition started of putting a Pickle ornament on a Christmas tree. I thought the idea of whoever finds the pickle on Christmas morning getting to unwrap the first present to be a really neat idea. A few hours later my son said he wants me to do something special this year. My guess is since there won’t be any gifts from Santa this year that he wants to still have something fun to keep the holiday alive. I told him about what I read about the pickle ornament but he didn’t seem to find it as interesting as I did! Then today I saw @Platespinner posted about her families tradition on the eve of Sinterklaas avond. They put their shoes in front of the fireplace and then mom fills them with delicious chocolates. I have just under two weeks to come up with something special for my kids this year. I would love to hear about your traditions now or as a kid! The Santa in the photo I attached is a 4 ft tall singing dancing one my parents bought me 10+ years ago.

Sorry, no real traditions here, Christmas eve we watch variety shows, eat snacks, open one present and then head to bed and Christmas day is open presents, make a roast and pudding and then resting. Very nice beard on the singing dancing Santa. :)

Christmas Eve we go to my father in laws for a little dinner and exchange gifts and watch a Christmas movie. Christmas Day we go to my mom and dads to exchange gifts and have dinner. Nothing very exciting.

Some years after we've all gathered in the living room to open gifts, I read the story of the birth of Jesus from the Bible.

@shaggin When we were all sitting together to open gifts, I would read the story from the Bible to all of us.

I don't really have a tradition. We celebrate Christmas with just our immediate family now.

@shaggin I am sorry to hear about that. We used to do family gatherings at my Grandparents' house and play secret santa. But now a lot of the grand kids have gotten married and do their own thing or some travel during that time so we have family gatherings for other holidays like Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving and Chinese New Year

We didn't have any particular traditions but I hope you are able to come up with something. In my husband's household some time before Christmas they would set up their nativity set but the shepherds would be put away from the stable and each day they would be moved a bit closer before finally getting to the stable on Christmas Eve.

I saw on Facebook I think it was where a family unwrapped a member of the nativity scene and put it inside the stable. The last night when all were in the stable they read part of the Bible about Jesus’s birth.

@Kandae11 well that is it’s own tradition in a way. My family stopped going to church when my sister and I were small.

@shaggin Definitely, it was all about church services, food, family, giving of gifts - the usual thing.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but we always went to a midnight service on Christmas eve, and on Christmas day to the movie theater.

My family went to the movies as a tradition too but I can’t think if it was Christmas Eve or New Years Eve.

Our family had started two new traditions last year on Christmas Eve. One was to read a Christmas tree story and all the kids gets a money jar. The family pitches in with the money. We also open presents on Christmas Eve.

Very nice tradition you started! I bet the kids love that! I know mine would. I think I am going to go shopping Friday and buy them new pajamas an warm fuzzy socks to let them open on Christmas Eve and wear to bed.

Forget about the chocolate in the shoes. unless of course it's a stocking. The pickle one sounds fun. Have you gone caroling. Singing carols is always fun. How 'bout pin the tail on Santa's reindeer?!

I hate the cold and hate singing in front of people. My son doesn’t like to leave the house so that’s out ha ha. Thanks for suggesting so many things :) My youngest is 10 so pin the tail on the reindeer he would say he’s to old for. Hard to come up with things at this age. I couldn’t put food in our shoes as we are having problems with mice in our cellar and I don’t want them in the rest of my house. Plus the cat or dog would find them before my kids and that would be bad. The pickle ornament idea sounds the best option so far.

@db20747 my mom did that before :) She got a Pinata after Halloween and put money in it and tootsie rolls etc. The grandkids were all much younger then.

@shaggin How about a Christmas pinata. But more candy may be the last thing you need and you wouldn't want to accidently knock over the tree if someone swings and misses. Not to mention the mess. But, if you like a little action, it might work.

Open presents Christmas day and visit with my Dad. Usually in the evening I will drive around to look at all of the Christmas lights on homes.

When I was young my parents would drive us around to see all the Christmas lights. I was never really interested though. I still haven’t figured out what to do special for my kids this year.
