Peace and Tranquility

Streets in my area have seemed to be quieter suddenly. Don't know where people have gone to, but it is often like this, years after years, the last few weeks of December. Let say that I often look forward to this time of the year, just to have this sort of tranquility and peace. The only problem is, time has a habit of flying swiftly. Soon, the noise and chaos will come back with January. Yet, I heard that this often is the most stressful time for many families. Passing by a few fancy flats during my walk last week at night, I heard screams, things got smashed, cryings etc. Want to hear something funny? I think my iron pill has caused a few side effects: losing appetite and hair. The symptoms were not obvious at first until after about two weeks. I persisted for another week, just to see what happened. Two days ago, I had no choice but to stop taking the iron supplement temporarily. (By today, my taste buds seem to be OK again, so is my hair...) Don't you think that that is strange? Who wants to lose weight and becomes bald here (with some liver problem too )? Would you like to try iron supplement?

It is better if you get iron through your food instead of supplement. I get daily supply of iron from green leafy, vegetables and other iron rich food too.

@YrNemo I hope your iron level will not drop anymore.

@salonga I do hope so too, I don't like to have any more tests and blood tests. Too time-consuming.

I told the doctor so, but he was adamant that I had to take the supplement. He told me that if my iron level drops again next time (as in the next week or so when I have my next blood test), he would have no choice but asking me to go have other tests done (something about colon scan etc.). That freaked me out, hence my faithful following his instruction (until now ).

Weight and hair loss are two well known side effects of iron supplements. Iron may be toxic at high doses, stop taking those pills.

@YrNemo Having the minerals and vitamins naturally with the food is the best way to avoid problems.

Thanks for agreeing with me re: this. Yes, I have stopped taking it. I began to have metallic taste 24/24 after 7 days taking the iron supplement, but thought I should please that specialist by continuing with the pills. (I won't see him again until mid January. Can't phone him to ask for advice!) By day 10, I began to feel depressed suddenly for no reason, at the same time, no appetite whatsoever + the hair keeps falling like autumn leaves. There were a few days after that when I forgot to eat since I didn't feel hungry one bit. (And that was real weird!) Other symptoms followed which puzzled me greatly. In the end, I decided to make sure I have enough daily iron intake from food before quitting the pills. The foods taste good again now.

I have just started taking mine again, I don't care for it as it has been upsetting my tummy lately. I have only been taking it about 2 times a week for this reason. I have really thinning hair from being so anemic.

@YrNemo A few of my kids are anemic, think it is from having kids so fast for some of them. I have a health condition that is causing mine. Yes I eat lots of anything that is high in iron to try and help. I don't want another blood transfusion.

Most of us in the family has this anemic problem, and we don't lose our hair at all from not taking the supplement. The fact that my hair suddenly falls like autumn leaves, frightened me (very uncomfortable too). It is OK now, no more falling (no more pill either, I am happy eating red meats and beef liver! ).

@Ithink If you have Thalassemia, (as one of my ancestors must have been, if we really come from Count Dracula ), then it is likely that that inherited blood disorder must have been passed from you to your children and eventually to their children's children.

I don't know if the side effects are different for different people but I did take iron supplements before and didn't experience those side effects. Glad to know you got your appetite (and hair!) back though.

@YrNemo Oh okay, it could be then. Will you continue taking them again though?

@cahaya1983 Just checked, I only need to eat about (slightly less even) 100g of cooked liver a day and I should have more than the amount required (which is 14mg). I will perhaps take it once every few weeks perhaps (it contains about 104mg of iron per pill)

I didn't have that same problem before (say 2 decades ago). Guess aging has something to do with it.

Enjoy the quiet while you can. How dreadful for you! I'd throw those iron pills out and eat more iron rich food.

Yes, I have been doing that, throwing the pills away (to some place which I could find them again later . Right now, I am eating nutritious meals, red meats, green veggies, beef livers etc. (And yes, I am enjoying the quietness of the area, no more car doors banging on the side streets, car shriekings at corners, etc.) I won't have this sort of atmosphere again for almost another year.

@YrNemo Lol! Are you taking the pills under a doctor's supervision?

@DianneN Yes, he didn't believe that I was anemic. He thought I had colon cancer or something... These pills are supposed to prove to him if my body could absorb iron or not. (The next blood test is in a week or so time.)

Where do the people go at this time? Yes it's stressful times. I avoid iron supplement because I feel sick every time I take it.

So I have found someone who dislikes iron supplement just like me. People go holiday at this time of the year, mass exodus. They will rush back mid January or late January, depends on how deep their pockets are. In the meantime, burglars are on the prowl.

The aliens from space must have come in a big spaceship one night (it must be at night, right? according to movies ), scooping up everyone, black cats and black kittens included (black dogs too for all I know ). Other than that, I can't explain . (I will check to see if the black crows have gone too or not, will report later!)

Too much iron can be bad for you too. It's difficult getting the balance right.

Guess all the good food I consume recently provide enough daily iron intake for my body, hence those iron supplement becomes a burden instead.

The side effects don't sound too good. Have you been advised to take iron supplements or is it your own idea?

They (those specialists) caught me red handed from my blood tests. I come from Count Dracula's background, we all get anemic now and then, and we never worry about it. Unfortunately, this specialist was trying to find some other bugs in my system, he didn't find any, but he found that low level of iron and began to speculate... (badly for my case! Hence the iron supplement!)

I wonder if another type of iron pill would have the same side effects - or they are all the same.

I thought of that too, but we have to keep this in mind too, that it seems as our daily iron intake is about 14mg. Each pill I took there contains 105mg. No wonder my body protested violently that way!

Perhaps my body doesn't need that extra iron anymore, hence, the signs... (the livers perhaps were screaming, 'why are you making me work overtime like this?' )

If your body isn't low on iron then taking iron can be bad. Was your blood tested to see how low you were? I have always had anemia and no doctor suggested anything to me. I started taking iron on my own and fell so much better and I actually sleep well at night for the first time in my life!

if an iron supplement caused that, then no thank you. This can be a very stressful time of the year because so many over spend or are struggling to make ends meet. Soon many here by us will be off to the coast and it will also be quieter for a while.
