The wrong way to collect rocks aka. My surgery

This has been a fantastic and busy weekend - and that is probably a good thing since I predict that this coming week will be very quiet. Tomorrow I will have surgery. Wow that seems dramatic. It's a very minor procedure and at the risk of giving you all too much information - it's to remove my gallbladder. About 5 years ago - as I was going to bed I laid down and like a light switch I got the worst pain in my back. I thought I had messed up my back - somehow. It moved around to my front - about chest level. I was nauseous and all that progressed to about the worst pain I could describe. That was my first and hopefully only trip to the ER. Well the ER didn't tell me what it was, sent me home. My dad who has had gallstones for ages - we compared notes. Sure enough - what it was - was a gallbladder attack. I had many more. At first it was only eating bad combinations of food. So I skipped mixing grease and chocolate. Then it started happening with one or the other - grease or chocolate. Currently it seems to be fairly unpredictable. I've gotten it from pancakes and coffee. I've gotten it from leaning across a chair back the wrong way. And I've had several attacks last the better part of a day. And these attacks have the potential to render a person unable to do anything except roll on the floor. So... out it comes. Surgery seems so weird. It's like choosing a span of time (the surgery itself and the recovery later) that you won't feel well. But in this case it's making this choice rather than having random pain that has the ability to incapacitate. I've never had any surgery or procedure before and that worries me - simply that I don't know what to expect. However my mom inspires me ... she has had many major surgeries and she powers right through them. So MyLot, by the next time I write a discussion I will be - one faulty organ. :-) Photo: Pixabay

I would prefer to have it removed instead of living with the worry of when the pain will strike. You will be fine - think positive.

You will feel much better without that pesky organ. I hope it is minimally invasive surgery.

Are they doing it laparoscopically? Mine was a piece of cake. I walked into Walgreen’s with my dad to get my pain med prescription filled after the surgery. Worst thing: gas pain (they pump your abdomen full of gas to expand everything so they can get the gallbladder out). You’ll love your pain meds when that pain hits. Other than that, I had no complications at all. I pray yours goes just as smoothly.

You'll get an injection, fall asleep and notice nothing. When you wake up, the surgery is over and everything will be ok. All the best to you!

@TheHorse That's interesting to hear. Maybe this is the normal feeling. People are just afraid of the injection although there is really nothing to be afraid of.

Lots of people do wonderful after having their galbladder removed. I hope yours go smoothly and will be watching for an update here. A friend of mine had her gallbladder removed when she was pregnant with her third child. The pain you described sounds unbearable!

It's better to get prepared for the surgery as it's a minor one and you will get rid of the pain you are living with. One of my relative had undergone the surgery recently and she is good now after having it.

I had mine out back in 1998 if I remember. It was with laser surgery and I never looked back. Here is a link if you want a quick look but I can tell you, you'll be alright. I will put in a prayer for you. Virtual hugs.
The best treatment for painful gallstones is surgery to remove your gallbladder. While this sounds extreme, it’s more common -- and safer -- than you might think.

Well good luck on your surgery and I hope it all went well. I had mine removed in 2011 i had it done laparoscopy instead of cutting me open. I still have some issues here and there but not as bad when i did have my gallbladder.

My mother and father-in-law both have their gallbladders removed through operations. They were discharged from the hospital after 2 days and just recuperated at home. So no need to worry, my friend.

Good luck to you on your surgery. Just rest easy knowing the fact that you are alive during the time of greatest medical advances and knowledge in the history of the earth, and that you are in good hands with the doctors! My mom had her gallbladder removed, and she did just fine during the surgery; I suspect you will too!
