Debate!

I had a rather interesting encounter while on Twitter. Apparently, there was a debate about why Minecraft with their new Aquatic update is not making their new mob, the dolphin, not ridable. And they clarified because riding a dolphin is cruel. Which is really is! Dolphins in real life should not be used as entertainment and be ridden. A favorite youtuber of mine, StacyPlays, agrees that Minecraft should teach kids that certain animals just need to stay wild. I kind of disagreed with is as a gamer point of view. If you play a game, it doesn't mean that you are going to do in that game you are going to do in real life. It is like a kid wanting to find a gun after playing GTA. With the right amount of teaching they learn, what is in a game, stays in the game. And that is fine! However, Stacy made a point that kids who play this game will go up to their parents asking to go on vacation to go ride dolphins and instead of a parent thinking, "how cruel" to ride a dolphin. They will want to give their child whatever they want so they don't throw a fit and them give the cruel people who force these dolphins and gain more profit. And that made me realize...parents and adults are freaking stupid. They don't teach their kids morals like my mamma did. She always taught me the monsters you see in horror movies are not real and the games you play are not real, so do not do what you do in these games. And that is the misconception that the media does. They think the games are causing kids to be violent and horrible people when it is the people who are supposed to be taking care of them, teaching them, the difference between reality and fantasy! So after that I ended up agreeing with her. I still think it is a little silly because it is a video game about blocks, but without the right guidance, things could go bad. and then we had a little conversation about violence in video games and such and it was a good conversation. I feel very happy that I got to have this debate with her and open my eyes to both sides of the matter. Parents, please, before giving a game to your short, before sitting them in front of a tv, teach them what is real and what is fantasy. It isn't the games fault, it isn't the movie's fault. It is all about your guidance.

I never would have thought about the fact that playing a game where the character rides a dolphin would make a kid want to ride one in real life but I do see her point. I guess I don't feel strongly enough about it to really choose a side. It's always nice to have a healthy debate without name calling etc like so many people do and ruin a discussion.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to think that playing a game where the character rides a dolphin would make a kid want to ride one in real life. I mean, games are full of that and so are children's cartoons. Animals talking, flying, etc. It's fantasy! Children should be encouraged to use their imaginations!

I agree with you 100%, it's all about the guidance of the parents/guardians. Children should be taught the difference between reality and fantasy. I remember watching horror movies and violent games as a child, I didn't grow up to be a murderer or anything I was taught that it was just a movie/game for entertainment purposes.

You can build boats with a little of wood, why would you ever think of riding dolphins?! I wonder what kind of loot they leave once you kill them. I agree with what you said, children must be taught games and movies don't always match reality. However, most of the time, they happen to have a moral, but it is not always clear... otherwise it would be a lecture and not a piece of entertainment.

I was thinking about the loot as well haha Well, parents are not giving the kids a lecture, so why can't a video game tell from what is wrong and what is right?

I somehow doubt that all kids playing Minecraft will be going out and demanding to ride dolphins. But I do get what she's saying. Nowadays, especially, some parents seem to be lacking in the guidance department. They use games, TV, and cellphones/tablets as babysitters and don't bother to teach their kids the difference between fantasy and reality. The adolescent girls who tried to sacrifice their friend to Slenderman comes to mind...

I don't think all parents and adults are as you say stupid. However, I see both sides and it is as you say a debate and open for discussion.

@DesirousDreamer Not all parents. Agreed some shouldn't have kids but I am great mom and my parents were wonderful. The proof is in the pudding I guess or the "apple" so to speak.

I used to baby sit a lot and I tell you I beg to differ. Parents are so absent minded they will place their kids in front of anything just so the parents get some work done. They don't care what is on the tv or what their kid is playing as long as the kid is quiet for 25 minutes. It is very sad because they kids are not taught a thing by parents anymore.

@Freelanzer Oh I have known many amazing parents, but some just don't know any better.
