I first learned about Crowley's murder when a video showed up on YouTube of crime scene photos. It was eerie and strange to watch the still photos scroll by, one by one, until the police calls broke the silence. A neighbor called police after noticing that packages were stacked up on the front steps of the house. He told police that there were several dead bodies inside the house. You can hear the distress in the police officer's voice when he relays the message that there were indeed two adults and one child dead. The story of David Crowley's life, love and death is encapsulated in this documentary. In some ways it seems like the only chance we will get to see his per project. This is a blend of shot footage as well as the behind the scenes events and interviews with his friends and fellow filmmakers. Before Gray State was started, there were ton of people who followed the theory that the government wasn't really in control of the United States and that the “1%” made the big decisions. This hangs over the entire film and even though I had seen about 70% of the footage, I wasn't aware of the words written on the livingroom wall in blood. One thing that really got to me is the reactions of those who worked on the film; they slowly dissect the footage of David then his wife and daughter. One of the most numbing parts of A Gray State is when David is filming his daughter Ranyia and she start talking about monsters and the meaning of the word “dangerous”. What she says is mind numbing because her description of events are almost exactly the same as what happens months later. Who killed David and his family? No one is sure but as far as some agencies are concerned it was a murder suicide scenario Through the end of the first our of the movie you start to see the egg cracking when David's phone interview (recorded) shows a rather paranoid recluse. What prompted him to go to the “dark place” he references or why he would pull away from everyone? Did their spiritual convergence have anything to do with their social isolation? Are there more clues in David's daily journal entries? When you see how far he and his wife have fallen from reality it isn't hard to iagine the murder suicide scenario but at the same time you have to ask yourself about the driving force behind the change and if it ws all just a contrived way to tie up loose strings? I mean, what better way to kill off Gray State and possibly opening the eyes of the naive than to slowly drive someone to the point of not wanting to live in social discord and future chaos.
