How long should it take to see a specialist? UPDATE

United States
January 15, 2018 11:39am CST
I ask this because a week before Christmas, my dad went to the lab had blood work done. They called him a week later to say he needed an ultra sound. His kidney function is low. The ultra sound unit called scheduled him for week later. It took another week to get the results back from he doctor. They are having a specialist call. We are not on the 15th and no specialist yet, they are booked and could take a few more weeks. In the meantime, my dads kidneys are not functioning correctly. We had two different medical plans, and took me almost 5 months for me to see the eye specialist. I really hope this won't happen to my dad. *************************************************************************************** The Nephropathy unit just called , and my dad will be seen on 1/18 @ 3:15

Oh goodness, this does not sound like a very efficient way to deal with patients. Things are very quick here.

@CookieMonster46 It's the same in my native country (Italy) you have to wait months before they book an apointment.

I'd say as soon as a week to 3 weeks depending on your medical insurance. You have to always call and follow up with them. (That's my personal experience).

@CookieMonster46 Sorry to hear that. Did you also mention if anyone backs out of their appointment or cancels to call you? I have them do that for me if its urgent.

I am glad he is being seen. My sister's kidneys sometimes have problems. She has seen a urologist more than once. She has had two stones blasted. The doctor tells her how to improve her function, but she still things she can finagle around the rules that keep her healthy.

That is so wrong. They should only set appointments when they know they have a specialist. Hope they get one soon for your dad.

That's too bad. There must be a specialist on-call every time they are needed. When it comes to saving life, even a minute is beneficial.

5 months is too long! I hope your dad won't have to wait that long. It usually doesn't take that long here, I think it wouldn't take more than a month.

It's ridiculous, your father has low kidney function, yet they're not in any big hurry. What's their problem anyway? Don't they even care?

I will never understand it, I know when i was having Kidney stone, they said i needed to see a urologist, it took about a month before i could see one and he only worked 1 day a week appointments were after 5. My dad has cancer and diabetes, you think they would be concered.

Depends on urgency. Specialist usually take a week to book and a few months out for actual appointed. Ive had them rush appointed to same or near same day . the primary care Dr rushed them since my baby was outputting blood.

I would think this is urgent, someone with low kidney function is never good news. In your case I am glad it was rushed.
