Flipping the House of Representatives

After months of being disappointed by our current U.S. Representative, a woman my husband and I actually know and have voted for in the past, I felt it was time to take action towards the goal of flipping the House of Representatives from a Republican majority to a Democratic majority. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I have voted for members of both parties. I am registered as non-partisan, referred to as an Independent in some states. Despite my lack of political affiliation, our current Representative has voted to allow coal mines to dump waste into streams; she has expressed support for gun silencers; she opposes closing gun loopholes; she voted to allow more oil wells off the coast of California. The vast majority of Californians, including those who live in her district, are opposed to these issues. She has chosen to represent her political party rather than the people who live in the District she is supposed to represent. As a result, I am doing my part to flip the House of Representatives from Republican to Democratic. I do not care about political parties. I have no plans to become a Democrat. However, I care very much about the environment, and reasonable gun restrictions, even though we own guns and taught all our daughters to shoot. I still feel there are some devices which people should not own. Last night I went to a candidate forum for our favorite candidate to the US House of Representatives, held up a sign and talked to people coming to the forum. Whether we succeed or not, at least I feel better because I am taking action. That's me in the middle of the above photo and Katie Porter, or candidate, is in the red dress and black jacket on the right-hand side.

Glad you are doing what you feel is right. I'd be with you on those issues, too.

@DianneN - It has been decades since I was last involved with a political campaign. However, this year I felt that I could no longer just sit on the sidelines and complain. It feels good to be doing something!

That's a tall guy next to you - or are you really, really short? And good for you for doing something to address things you're not happy about. So many of us just set on the fence and let others do the work.

@JudyEv - I'm 5 ft 4 inches tall. That guy must be 6 ft. 6 inches, at least. He is really tall. The funny thing, he is dating the campaign manager for the candidate, Katie Porter, and the campaign manager is even shorter than I am. They make a cute couple! It actually feels good to be helping Katie Porter. It feels like I am doing something.

That would be a great thing to get a new Rep for that area. I am hoping for a "Blue Wave" to sweep those who vote with the GOP from office.

@JamesHxstatic - I am hoping for a Blue Wave, too. In fact, I see people wearing Blue Wave t-shirts around here sometimes. I wear my "Make America Think Again," t-shirt. We currently have four Republican representatives in Orange County. Two of them have already announced they are not running for re-election, which will make it easier to replace them with a Democrat. My representative is not one of them. However, Hilary won this District by 5 percentage points, which gives us hope that a Democrat can beat our representative. Fingers crossed!

The only trouble I have with this is that any democratic agenda is set to destroy too much of the good we want. Democrats have proven time and time again they do not deserve the power we can afford them—and too often even if they have SOME good ideas, the damage done by their aggressive uber-liberal agenda is just too much to bear.

@porwest - I do not belong to either party. Too often I have been upset by the decisions they both make. Both parties have extremist agendas, at least in some areas. Neither party seems willing to support moderate, middle-of-the road candidates. The best I can hope for is a split government that is forced to work together. It is a sad compromise, but nothing else seems possible at the moment. I consider the uber-conservative agenda as dangerous and anti-Christian as you believe the uber-liberal party to be. Perhaps the best path is in the middle, at least until we have reasonable people in government who are willing to do what is best for ALL the people, not just their supporters.

@porwest - Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, then. My experience has been much different from yours, especially considering I am a life-long union member, and the proud daughter of one. I've never known the Republicans to actually support the little guy, but there is no point in trying to convince you of that and, since I'm almost 70, you are certainly not going to change my opinion. I just got home from a Town Hall Meeting with the Democratic candidate for Congress in my District. I cannot wait to replace Mimi Walters with Katie Porter, a law professor and consumer advocate, and there is a very good chance that will happen. You can have whoever you want in the District where you live and, hopefully, Congress will become a place where our legislators can actually talk things through and learn to make reasonable compromises.

@DeborahDiane The republicans have ALWAYS been for the little guy, despite what the media tells you. The middle class was best served by free enterprise and capitalism, and those are the guys who make that happen. The dems can tell you all day they want you to succeed. All the while they support unions which destroy jobs, and offer welfare checks to make up the difference.

Good for you! I know it DOES feel good to get involved, to know that you're DOING SOMETHING. I haven't really done anything yet this year other than make a few small donations to the Democratic Party and to a few individual House and Senate candidates or incumbents a believe in and support and, of course, sign petitions and send emails to various lawmakers but I intend to get active as we get closer to the election. I've made phone calls in the past and I'm going to volunteer to do that again. We NEED a blue TSUNAMI to fix the mess Trump has made of this country in such a short amount of time.

@anniepa - I think the things you have done are wonderful! Yes, we need a blue tsunami and, hopefully, we will have one. I think a lot of people feel the way we do. Our last election was a HUGE mistake. Thank goodness we get a do-over.
