Where do squirrels do when it is winter outside where they are?

I know bears hibernate and birds fly to warmer weather. But, what do squirrels do? Do they have shelter against the snow and cold to sleep off the winter?

Yes, during the Fall months, they build nests up in the trees, out of sticks and leaves. Their young are nestled inside this nest, while they are very young. During the winter, they all crawl inside these nests and draw heat one from the other.

I haven't seen one because there are no squirrels over here @Hannihar I bet it would annoy a lot of rats, cats and even my dog if he even see one.

Why would squirrels annoy rats LK. I thought cats hate rats.

I don't think they hibernate. Though I don't see as many in winter as in the other seasons.

I see they don't hibernate at all. They are certainly dressed for chilly conditions aren't they?

I know some have shelter, because they store nuts for winter, and I thought they slept in between eating.

The squirrels round here are active all year round, though they probably stay in their trees in really bad weather.

So I take it they make a home for themselves in their trees that is cozy and out of the weather if it is bad Jabo?

The squirrels around me spend the fall gathering nuts, twigs, leaves, and branches and build nests in knotholes of trees. I watched one heave a big branch with leaves through a knothole. It was amazing to see.

Did you take a picture of it doing it or did you not want to bother it Dianne while it was at work. It must be fun to watch them.

@Hannihar Sorry. No photo. I was walking Doodles at the time and can't take my eyes off him for one second. I leave my phone in the house so I don't get distracted, except by squirrels! Lol! Actually, Doodles was fascinated by the squirrel, too.

@DianneN Do you walk Doodles on a leash? If so, how was he trained to do that. I tried that once with my other cat and she wanted no part of it. Sophie would fight me all the way on that one. So, what did he do when he saw the squirrel?

As was mentioned they have their nests. Believe you me, they are fine during winter. They are always at my bird feeder no matter the weather. Just like a mail carrier who delivers mail through rain, sleet, and snow, lol.

Don't mail carriers go around in mail trucks or on foot? Wow, never fear a squirrel is near and always around. Can you get close to them?

@Hannihar They have their trucks but some towns they deliver at your door if that is where the mailbox is located. So there is some walking involved. As for the squirrels they taunt me by sitting on my deck and eating their nuts. Pesky little devils

@Hannihar No not that close Hanni. When I open the patio door to my deck they run off. But they do go into my garden and eat my vegetables in summer.

Squirrels don't hibernate. But when it's very cold they remain in their nests. And also they reduce their activity. They eat. Some squirrels do hibernate during the winter (ground squirrels)
