Planning Ahead with Spring Bulbs

This is a photo of a tulip breaking through. Kind of gives one a little hope if you're in the Northern Hemisphere that Spring is not too far. I decided to make sure I purchase a Canna Lily Bulb this year so it will be ready to bloom in July/August. Unfortunately I couldn't find a free image of a Canna Lilly in full bloom so just chose the one above of a tulip bulb bursting into life. The Canna Lilly grows into a single, huge, tall, tropical-looking plant with either a bright Yellow, Red or Orange Bloom. It's one single bloom that lasts about a month at the end of the summer. But what's best about it is it provides the owner with a gorgeous display of large, tropical leaves that are lovely on their own before the bulb bursts into flower. You can take it in during the ensuing winter and if you're kind to it- and hide it away properly, it will bloom again the next year. The bulbs are expensive (about $12.00 for one here) but the upside is you usually can get a few years out of beautiful blooming for that price. Here's looking forward to the Canna Lilly! Now, all I have to do is to remember to buy the darn thing this Spring.

If you look up Canna Lilly you should come up with images of full blooms.

@rebelann Beautiful flowers but are they free to publish? That was what I'm worried about! Thanks though for them- really incredible colour!

@MarymargII I usually dig up the bulbs in Autumn and plant them back, they stay healthier.

@LadyDuck That's a great thought and a good practice that I may start doing this year- although I have brought in tulip bulbs to keep the squirrels from eating them-- :)

Look them up you will see how majestic they are- you would have to dig them up in Switzerland every Autumn like we must do here but they are worth it.

You could, however, in the UK. It would work like they do in Canada- you'd have to take out the bulbs in Winter. :)

@MarymargII , our winter can be quite cold with black frost sometimes. So I am not too sure of that.

The Cannas are wonderful flowers and I'm so sure you have them in South Africa where you will never have to take them out of the soil as it is so tropical!

@bluesa We would have to check the temps. and maybe you're right then- they may have to be dug up to replant in the Spring.

Yep- I'm already planning on visiting a few garden centres. Some will not be open but I want to see the price this year. Have you ever grown them?

What a beautiful scene that is - those two leaves - a photographer's delight. We just did not care for Canna in the good old days and now I cannot find them anywhere. I just long to have them in my garden

The mentioning of flowers and some may be more in tuned with a certain flower. Sounds as though there's some joyfulness occurring.

I used to have bulbs that I dug up every fall and stored in vermiculite, not Calla lilies, however. It gets to be a drag after a while lol

I have canna`s and here they multiply and soon I have a fence of them all summer. The yellow are by far the prettiest to me. Since we don`t usually get super cold I leave them in the ground and they pop up every year. The ones I have now are over 30 years old.

Yes, the yellow ones are gorgeous too- and they do just grow so much in height when you can leave them.
