I can't abide dishonest practices

I received a bill from the hospital where I had the massive kidney infection. All together, I was in the hospital for three days, received tons of antibiotics, IV fluids, CT scan, blood draws every two hours, was put to sleep to have a stent inserted, and two weeks later had surgery to remove the kidney stone. So you know it was an astronomical bill. I am so thankful I have Medicare and BC/BS of NC which usually covers my medical bills. I received a bill a couple of weeks ago for $74 which I mailed to them. Then when I got a bill for over $400, I really investigated my EOB's (explanation of benefits) and called the hospital. I was told that, "Oh, never mind, you don't owe anything." I said, "Then why in the heck did you send me a bill? And what about the first check I sent you?" She said, "We'll send you a refund in a month." Now I know I'm not the only patient who received a bill they did not owe. If I hadn't paid attention to the EOB's, I would have paid that bill. And I feel pretty sure many others have done the same. They just got caught this time and assured me they always send refunds when patients overpay. Yeah, right. When they bill the patient before they are finished being paid by the insurance companies, they know what they're doing. GRRRR!!! That's so wrong. I feel they probably take advantage of older people who don't realize what's happening. I might be an "older people", but I'm sure glad I didn't accept their fraudulent practices.

That is very bad. So I wonder there that extra payment goes. Into their slush fund for their Christmas party?

You could be right! And even if they do send refunds, they've collected interest on your payment in the meantime.

Sure glad that you were paying attention. But like you wrote, lots of people might not be so "swift". What a shame.

There's no telling how much they've collected.

This is why I never pay the first bill. I work in a hospital and they pay a portion of the bill. I normally receive the first bill before the hra pays and i know it's not right. I work in billing also so I deal with this on a constant basis. Always check your eob's or call the insurance if your not sure, that's what I do.

I would be mad too. I'm sure plenty of people pay and don't realize that they don't owe anything. I always try to check my bills before sending payment when the insurance is involved.

The fact that I received the bill after the EOBs made me think maybe I did owe it until I studied everything more carefully.

These hospitals and medical doctors just bill you and these billing agencies expect you to rectify any errors. Like we have nothing better to do with our time but to check on their mistakes. They are hoping you don't check. It is really a dishonest way to treat people for sure...

Oh yeah, if they can they will @1creekgirl . And this goes back a long time too. When my brother was shot and killed, the ER tried saying they gave my brother 100 pints of blood. Seriously???? And they wanted my mother to pay the bill. My brother was over 21; it was not my mothers responsibility.

I'm so sorry about your brother. Hospitals and insurance companies can be very dishonest at times.

That is just terrible! What you went through is bad enough, and then to do that to you. This happens to much, and I wonder if anyone is pocketing this money.

The hospitals are probably keeping a lot of the money. They claim they send refunds, but who knows if they do all the time?

Thanks, I'm just glad I didn't send them $400 and then have to wait a month to get a refund.
