Hawk vs Squirrel Outside My Window

A few weeks ago I witnessed a scene I’ve never seen before. My home office has a window that looks out on several trees that are a home to squirrels. On that day, this normally bucolic scene was the site of a rather dramatic confrontation. A small hawk landed on one of the lower branches of a tree that’s directly outside my window. He soon spotted a squirrel running up and down the trunk of that same tree very close to the hawk. This started a game of hide and seek, with the squirrel running up and down one side of the tree, while the hawk fluttered around the trunk trying to get at its bushy-tailed playmate. (Actually, I don't think the squirrel considered this a game!). I suspect the hawk was young and inexperienced, because it never came close to catching that pesky squirrel, and eventually flew away, never to be seen, by me at least, again. I'll probably never get to watch a lion stalk a water buffalo in Africa, but I was able to experience the drama of the chase right outside my window. And, although the hawk went away hungry, I'm happy he couldn't catch my little tree-dwelling friend.

He does sound like a young bird.
