Anyone have experience with MTurk?

I heard some mylotters talking about MTurk recently, which is Amazon Mechanical Turk. You do tasks there (called HITs) and you get rewarded for it. One example is to extract items from a shopping receipt into a form. Though the rewards for each task seem to be in pennies and not dollars, at least from the list I see now, I decided to try it out. I have registered and am awaiting approval. Curious to know how the entire process works. Seems you don't get credited instantly the reward for a task you complete. Anyone else trying out MTurk? What are your experiences with it?

From what you say I would assume not all countries can participate then.

Really? When was that? I quit because only Indians and Americans can convert earnings to cash.

I know of at least two users here that use it regularly. I don't anymore. But had good luck when I did years ago.

I hope I get approved so I can try it out. And then I will see if it is worth the time. If I have to spend hours a day doing stuff only to make pennies not sure it's worth it.

@thislittlepennyearns In a way the two are similar but there is a difference. At least here you interact with others and have fun. There you do tasks you don't necessarily want to do. And you can make more here than there in a short time. And it seems it takes many days before the HITs are reviewed and you are credited... I still need to figure the site out.

@lovebuglena How is that any different from here? We spend hours here sometimes for just a few pennies a day.

Are you still active in Amazon Mechanical Turk? I just re-logged in today after years of not logging in. My username and password are still valid, but the site prompted me to create an account after re-logging in. Well, it seems it's just to verify my account. After providing my name and address, I was able to view my dashboard. Years ago. I quit because I cannot convert my earnings to cash. I can only convert it to gift certificate. Now that we have Amazon online store here in our country, Philippines I think I can use the gc for some purchases.

@lovebuglena I can relate. I was also so careful in doing those tasks, and so afraid I'll commit mistakes. I was able to earn $4 and transferred $3 to my Amazon account. I'm a Filipino. I don't think there's an option to convert my earnings to cash. Right after I decided to quit, one employer emailed me asking me to help him finish his tasks. I was really so happy. That's the first time someone contacted me to help him with his tasks. I feel elated, but what can I do? I can't use my earnings. I politely declined, and told him I already emailed Amazon admin and requested to please also let other nationalities to have the right to cash out the earnings. I also told him to help me convince admin. I can't recall if he replied.

I still have an account there but I am not active. I got tired of doing the transcribe receipts tasks or entering stuff into text boxes that I see on the screen, where sometimes it was hard to tell what the handwriting was saying. Those pay pennies and I always worried I might make a mistake. I could not find other things to do, at least not those I qualified for. I made in total I think $1.48 or so. Good thing I was actually able to transfer that money to my Amazon Payments account and then cash out from there. On Amazon Payments the minimum to cash out is $1.

I gave it a go - seemed like a lot of work for very little return, some of it time-bound (so many somethings in a minute, etc). Good luck with it, perhaps you can tell myLot how you get on.

So you are saying that some tasks are timed? If so, what happens when you run out of time but haven't finished completing the task?

@TheHorse I decided to try it out. Nothing to lose. I have time on my hands for that. Just have to be up to doing the tasks they offer.

I already got approved and did 13 HITs. It was the transcribing receipts ones. Some receipts were very long and tricky to do.

I did try this once but it was a lot of work for a small amount of money. I remember extracting description and amount data from a receipt and then typing them in a box below for verification.

I have been with MTurk for 5 years. It was good until a year ago when the bottom seemed fall out and my earnings plummeted. Without going into detail, the vast majority of simple easy quick tasks are no more.

I got approved today. Did some hits that had to do with transcribing receipts. Found some a bit tricky so hopefully I did them right. Last one I got a message that my item count seems off. Couldn't find why. Seemed I didn't miss anything. Submitted as is. Hopefully, I will get credited for it. Would suck not to get credited because it was a lot of items to do.

You do tasks there (they are called HITs) and after you complete them if they get approved you earn something for doing it. So far all I have done was transcribe receipts as that's what I was allowed to accept. Will see if there is anything else I can accept without needing to qualify for it.
