I want to be a selfish person......but something wont let me.

There are times that I really wish I was a selfish person. Times were people ask for money and I could say no without feeling bad. Okay, well, the only one that borrows money from me is my older sister. We have a love/hate relationship. Most of the time, I don't want to be around her and if I'm completely honest, she only wants me around for 3 things: To take care of her kids, to cook/clean for her and to borrow money off of me. Today, she borrowed $250 and then said she would pay me back next Friday. That is almost two weeks later. And to make things worse between us, I asked her what bills they were and if I could see the bills to confirm that they were indeed going to shut the water off. She then told me that the money was for several bills and could only show me the one because the other bills were none of my business. Anyways, so not being able to say no to my sister is one reason why I know I'm not selfish. Another reason is that any extra money I do get, I put into the bank into a savings account. We never know what the future may bring so it's good to have a little money set aside. However, by trying to build my savings back up, (I had more in it but recently helped pay for my grandma's headstone), I've cut out buying myself anything I don't really need. I think the last frivolous item I bought for myself was a package of socks. I really wish I could be selfish sometime. Maybe when I get my taxes back, I'll buy myself something I've been wanting to get. Anyone want to take a guess as to what it is??

That's great you give money to your sister, in spite of your love/hate relationship. But a word from the wise, A fool and his money doth soon part. Give what U can, but don't give yourself out of house and home!!

@db20747 lol, it was until my sister found out about my vacation fund and how much i'm hoping to have it in by June. Me and my daughter were discussing what we wanted to do this summer and what to spend the money on and my sister walked up to us and I'm pretty sure she was being a smartass but she said, "you could give it to me if you dont spend it."

All my money goes into the bank but I know exactly how much I need to have for my bills each month. Then I figure out the spending money for if I want to take my daughter out and stuff like that. Any extra or leftover, stays in the bank or is put in an envelope for our summer vacation.

I'm one of the least selfish people in this world.. always giving to others whether its money, items, my time, babysit for free, etc. And sometimes, I hate it. But it's who I am and how I was raised. I could never ask to see a bill as proof, as it's not my business, and once you give someone money - what they do with it isn't your business. Its up to them to be truthful as to what they need it for and to actually use it for that. But I get the whole thing at the end of it.

True! Wishing I could be the black sheep now instead of being always a good shepherd. But cant fight the guilt, hoping they would appreciate all my effort someday.. of not being bad, although it is much faster when being one :-)

I don't think I will ever be appreciated by my sister. Because her life is harder than mine but she made it that way. She hurt her back and after her surgery, the doctor told her that she needed to move around more and to try to lose some weight. It's been over a year now since her surgery and she's gained probably 60 lbs, she sleeps all the time and gets tired just walking to the bathroom. She also wants to be declared disabled so she can get money from the state. She applies for jobs but when they call to set up interviews, she wont answer the phone because deep down, she wants free money. My life isn't at hard as hers is with all the bills but mine is just as bad sometimes. There are days where I don't sleep because I don't have the time. Between my job and other responsibilities, I'm lucky to be able to sleep 3-5 hours a night.

@CountryGirl31 yes yes, coz I think if what we have, lack to someone else. That where what we already have, is what they lack of. Cant really have both things at the same time.

There was a time that she wanted to borrow $400 and I told her that I would go with her to pay the bills. She refused so I didn't lend her the money. she then told me that she really only needed $200. I know it's probably none of my business about what bills she pays with the money I lend her but if she's asking to borrow money for bills, I want to make sure that it's actually going to the bills. And the sad thing about lending her $250 today is that I was planning on taking $300 out of the bank to put away in my wallet for me. I know they don't cost that much but I'm going to buy a metal detector for this summer. I've always wanted one lol. That and a really good camera but I'm also thinking about buying my daughter a brand new recliner for her birthday in may.

@CountryGirl31 - actually it is your business, its your money your lending, so it is your business. ive also always wanted a metal detector, i wish i knew someone who had one just to have an idea of how to use one and maybe get a little help on choosing one.

@Plethos Yea I dont think it's a bad thing to ask what she needs the money for that way if she tells me the water bill this week and asks again next week for the same thing I can say that she already paid that. metal detector, i've wanted one for awhile lol. I too wish I knew someone that had one I could try out to see if I would like it lol.
