Spent a little bit of time on my family tree today.

I created a GEDmatch ID sometime last year but haven't really gotten around to doing anything with it. I did share my ID with a group on facebook but no matches came up from the few that offered up their own ID numbers. Tonight I went back on my wiki tree and actually took the time to start adding people. I haven't added many, only the ones whose information I am sure about. I need to go back and create a work sheet to organize me so that I can input the rest on wikitree. Of course not everything I find will be completely accurate, but maybe it will connect me with people who share the same ancestors anyway. I need to do my own research for another side of the family, but I just don't seem to have the time to do that anymore. I know there are a few who do ancestry research on here. For those that have had their DNA (ancestral) tested, do you have a GEDmatch number?

Hi, I know what you mean, I also created a GEDmatch ID and haven’t done anything with it. Some of my DNA matches have asked me for it and I suppose they know what to do with it, so I gave it to them. Hopefully someday I will take some time and figure out how to do that kind of stuff. For now, I’m just working on adding to my family tree when I have time.

My estranged aunt contacted me and opened up her family tree for me. I was able to see my dad's mother's side of things which I had stale mated on for awhile. I don't work on my ancestry very much anymore.

I tried to my family tree for a school project when I was in college. I didn't get really far with it because my mother doesn't know many of my biological father's family.

I hav had to do a lot of research on my dad's side via online. My dad is the III (3rd) of his namesake so that was really all I had at first.

I have had my DNA done but have no idea what a GEDmatch number is! My problem with family tree'ing is that I know I must do it at a time when I have hours to spare, because I get so caught up in It! Pesky ancestors with their daft name spellings.

Yes, name spelling! There's a bit of a problem for a lot of us over here in the US with ancestors from Ireland or Scotland. A lot of our names with a MC or MAC used to be spelled with a G or a K but our ancestors changed it to a more phonetic spelling. GEDmatch.com is a free service, you upload your DNA kit (the websites offers instructions on how to do it, depending on whether you used anestrydna, 23andme etc etc) and you get an gedmatch id number that you can use to compare yourself to others world wide. It basically computes the likelihood that you and a person are related. There are other things the site offers, but I haven't looked into it, and a lot of it is more for the scientific aspect of DNA.,
