A car in space???

You have to say Elon Musk landing those two reusable booster rockets two hundred feet apart was one of the coolest space things we have ever seen, at least since the first time we saw the Space Shuttle return from a mission in the 1980s and land perfectly on a runway. The mission to put Elon’s sports car into space saw the booster and ship return in great shape, the vertical booster landing alone saving $70 million dollars on a regular space bill. The Space Shuttle booster rockets were reusable but they tended to land in the sea and full of seaweed and salt by the time they were dredged up. To see those two pencil thin rockets return to base and land like the Thunderbirds was incredible. How is it possible to get them to stop spinning on the decent, straighten up, decelerate and then land pin straight, and at the same time?? They didn’t even topple over!! This was essentially, of course, a publicity stunt to plug his kit and promote his brand of James Bond villain lifestyle and if his Tesla does return to Earth let’s hope it doesn’t hit anyone. Electric cars are notoriously quiet and can sneak up on you as pedestrian. His long term objective is to the cheapest delivery vehicle of satellites into space as NASA increasingly surrenders business to commercial space companies, keeping the sensitive military and spy contracts only. There are over 5000 space objects up there and that will also need hovering up, Moonraker style. Catastrophic space collision is increasingly likely. Most new satellites are the size of a microwave oven these days. It’s the jet fuel that’s expensive. I’m sure Musk would love to go to Mars in his life time but you need a whole different propulsion system for that. NASA are doing well on plasma boosters but nowhere near space ready. The whooping and hollowing at Musk base station at the mission was a little annoying and looked contrived as an Apple Iphone launch, lots of preppy young white faces delirious as if Scully just flashed them her boobs. So much for the hidden figures. Space maybe very black but the people going are still very white. Rockets are cool though and I was as excited when I saw the shuttle go up for real in 1996 at the Cape and loved this. You can bet a few dollars there is a West African guy up thee putting a parking ticket on it.

I just think he has way too much money and way too much time on his hands

If he gets the bulk of sat launches around the world he will be the words first trilionaire.

I thought this was cool - publicity stunt or not - even more cool though was the two boosters landing side by side on the pads!...looked like a special effects clip from a movie..... just loved that!
