Want My First Born TOO!

One would think getting a new license would be easy but, not in the state of Texas. If your a man then no problem but a woman, HA get ready for some work.
I have been to motor vehicle here 3 times now. The first time my husband and I went we were #49. This place is small and capacity on door is 49 so we wait about 20 min and then they call #12. Mind you this is 3 hrs after they opened and they are only on #12. We looked at each other and left for another day. We went again Wed morning, got there before 8 and there was a line to get in. Not bad, we were 9th in line. Wait 45 min and they are still not open, finally a worker who showed up called and said they were closed for the day due to technical difficulties. WHAT?? Thanks for the note on the door after we wait an hour in freezing cold wind. On to the next morning, get there and we are #1 in line AND I found a lucky penny. I am first to a window and the woman says, "I need both your marriage certificates, 2 bills with current addr. on them, soc sec card, previous license, and birth certificate." I was in shock, WHAT why do you need 2 marriage certificates?? "For a paper trail of your name change" she says.
Now mind you, my first marriage was 39 yrs ago and I was divorced 30 yrs ago. WHO keeps a license for that, not this girl. Do they not know that you burn those things when you get divorced, because they don't tear. I couldn't believe it but yet my husband got his with no problem.
Now I have to pay for a certified copy just to get a license and I have been driving for over 40 yrs.
Ladies, keep ALL your marriage licenses, especially if you want to drive in Texas. How crazy is this??
Is it like this in your town or state?

Well, I don't live there and I don't have a car so I won't have this kind of problem.

Only if you want one of the new licenses that can take the place of a passport. I go to AAA to renew mine but I am not sure if I could get a new one there. Here is what the website says
How to apply for a Texas Driver License
The Department issues driver licenses valid for up to six years to Texas residents. The Texas Driver’s Handbook is available online to help you qualify for a Texas driver license. You will need to provide proof of the following to apply for a driver license:
U.S. Citizenship or, if you are not a U.S. Citizen, evidence of lawful presence
Texas Residency
Identity, and
Social Security Number
Evidence of Texas Vehicle Registration* for each vehicle you own (New Residents who are surrendering an out-of-state driver license only.)
Proof of Insurance* for each vehicle you own
*If you do not own a vehicle, you will sign a stateme

Yes, I read all of that but the woman inside refused to give me on until I come back with the proper paperwork. She even circled everything I had to have in the little book and gave it to me. They won't give it to me unless I bring everything they asked for. She was looking straight at my Colorado license which I have had for over 40 yrs. We have already registered our car and gotten Texas plates

Ga is crazy like that too, They want my birth certificate and marriage license. I told them I have been married more than half my life but they still want to see it. I dread going in this time, I just hate pulling out all those legal documents, I worry so much about losing them, or misplacing them.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I have found a lot of my my documents just not the license I need. When I get it I am taking everything out and throwing it on their desk and asking if they want a blood sample too! I am so over this all already with these people.

That does sound a little weird to need a copy of your first marriage certificate. Hope next time you go to the DMV there isn't a hassle

It's getting tougher and tougher in every state, not just Texas. A lot of this has to do with new federal regulations that are being implemented to make it harder to forge official documents like driver's licenses. We can thank terrorism and identify theft as major reasons why it's getting harder and harder to get a license. I feel bad for women, because like you said, you have to provide more proof than men because of the name change.

@cintol What happens if you can't produce it? There's got to be some way around those difficult requirements.
