A compost pile is a great way to add to the soil when you begin your spring garden. There are so many things you can put in the compost that you might realize you can use. Here is a list: * Egg cartons. The paper ones * Saw dust * Corks. The real cork, not the synthetic ones. You can even add the last bit of wine. * Dryer lint and animal fur. Unless it all polyester there should be some lint in the trap. Animal fur can be used as well as human hair. * Newspaper, shredded paper, paper napkins and even business cards. * Dead flowers or other plants.

Composting is so popular here and many are not doing it well. There is getting to be a rat infestation in several parts of town.

@TheHorse Here in the country its just a pile and not in a bin. Soon as it warms more, I need to start digging the compost into the garden. Most of our food here is vegie-fruit and egg shell based so we have quite a compost heap.

Oh, does that mean they don't use bins that close tightly enough?

@TheHorse Maybe they are not using bins like a neighbor I once had. His pile stank so badly that I complained to him about it and he gave it up.

I've learned about paper over the last couple of years at the preschool. I didn't know about corks. But we use them for art projects.

We take all our (many) corks to a non-profit place that supplies things to teachers for about a dollar a bag. They have a world of stuff in the place.

That's a good list of items to use. I wouldn't have thought to use many of those.

I never knew about hair! My grandmother had a compost pile she had me run all food things too. Hair was scattered for birds and to discourage wild life from up by the house!
