Home Alone : Would you answer the door?

United States
February 12, 2018 11:02am CST
I was walking toward the kitchen just a few minutes ago when I started to hear a banging coming from the front door. The banging was followed by the sounds of the doorbell. Now let me explain the layout of this area of the house before I go on. The hallway ends at the dining room, but there is a small area called the foyer, where the front door is. The foyer has two entrances into the main house, one comes out on the hallway, the other in the dining area. This means the foyer has two full walls and two partial walls, divided by the doorways. One wall has the front door, which has a few parts of the shade missing, but not enough for anyone to see in unless they kneeled down to do so. If they kneeled down, I would be able to see them looking in. I hid where the corner angles outward, so not in the foyer but between the hallway and living room. Following me so far? I then went into the kitchen, which is just off the dining room. My movements were slow so as to not cause a creaking sound. The person kept knocking, but it wasn't until I heard the same type noise coming from the sliding glass door of the kitchen, that I reacted. I walked to the other side of the kitchen, away from the sliding glass door (Which they couldn't see through). When I looked out the window there, I saw the car in the driveway. It had "Duke Power" on it. I walked outside and hollered out a "hello". The person came around from the back, which is where the meter box is. He instructed me on what to do and then went back to the task at hand. I called my uncle and by the time I was off the phone with him, the guy had done what he came to do and left. My heart race was still up. All is well now, and there was no real threat, but it sure seemed like it by their vicious knocking!

Yes I wont answer that type of knock either when I am not expecting anyone. I have plans to build me a gate so no one can just drive up to my house and I am extending the dogs area to see all of the driveway.

In our area every building is gated and there are dangerous dogs.

@mydanods We don't have gated homes in our neighborhood. I mean, there are fences, but the houses are not surrounded by, and thus locked in by, the gate.

Home alone and my phone in the opposite part of the house too. If I went toward my phone, and the man had intended to break in, I would have been stuck. We live in a cul de sac.

I wouldn't either. Of course we don't tend to get night visitors, luckily.

I am often home alone. One night, someone was beating on the door at 3 am. I looked out the window and did not see a vehicle anywhere, so I did not answer but it really scared me. I suspect it was someone who was drunk and trying to get into the wrong place. It happens sometimes.

Did you call the police at all? I definitely would have done that, had someone been beating on my door at 3 in the morning.
• United States
15 Feb 18
@akalinus It's suspicious behavior, someone knocking at three am. Even if they didn't come out, it would be on file. What if another neighbor had the same thing happen to them?

@ScribbledAdNauseum No, I didn't. I don't think they would come if I did. Not unless there was a crime involved.

Yes, some people definitely have the "police knock.." I have to admit that even I have been told I have that knock. I am not persistent with it though, just three sharp rapports.

I had a bad experience answering the door many years ago..I will never do it again if I cannot see who it is.

It is sad that there are people out there ready and willing to cause harm to others. I don't think I could sell on craigslist or any site like it, atleast not without agreeing to meet somewhere.
• United States
14 Feb 18
@Courage7 I met someone off craiglist once, but I took someone with me and had them stay back within eyesight of me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I would not do it either selling things on craigslist or other sites where unknown strangers come to the door. No way or even meeting people in places no way. I dont blame you.

I would always ask who it is first before opening the door. You just never know.

I didn't want them to know anyone was home. I was ready to scream had they tried to open the door. Scream in hopes they'd get scared and run away. Luckily, I didn't have to do any of that. I think back now and realize my plan wasn't exactly the best.

I would be scared also if that is the case. I won't try going to the front door to see who is there. I will call the police if he is someone I don't know of and is bent in robbing the house. However, as to our house, we have 5 dogs on the front and even the pedicab drivers are afraid of them when one or two of them are outside the gate.

@ScribbledAdNauseum So it's the power company man.
• United States
14 Feb 18
I wasn't near my phone, and I also wanted to see if I could figure out who it was that was knocking. I am glad I didn't call because that would have been a waste of police resources. Though I think it would have taught the power company man NOT to knock so loudly.

During the day I open the door, but I always check first who is knocking. I look down from the first floor window and I see who is in front of the door.

Our set up is so that you can't see who is on the porch unless you look out the kitchen window. If you look out the kitchen window, they see you doing it.

@LadyDuck Well I am glad you have that for protection against unwanted / unknown people. I hope neither of us get into a situation where we feel threatened at our own home!

@ScribbledAdNauseum They see me if I look down from the upper floor, but if it's someone I do not know I ask to come later. No one can get in if I do not open the heavy wooden door.

@1creekgirl Oh no I know. In fact, rural areas probably get a lot of crime that people don't find out about.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The rural areas used to be safer than cities, but sadly, that isn't true now. Over the years we have had our home broken into three times while we were away. And we don't live in a mansion, but we have security cameras now.

Want to trade postal carriers? Ours will do anything they can NOT to come to the door. They stuff the mail into the box, sometimes denting items marked "fragile".

@Poppylicious Some of the homes here have letterboxes. They aren't used, and are more for show. I don't know, they may have been used a century or more ago..
14 Feb 18
@ScribbledAdNauseum As we all have letterboxes, usually as part of the front door, ours have no choice!

That must have been scary. I remember once someone was banging on the door really loud. It was persistent. Not sure if that person had rung the doorbell or not. I didn't go to open the door. I didn't feel comfortable opening a door for someone who was banging hard on my door. I didn't even feel comfortable looking at who it was outside. I just ignored it and tried not to freak out too much, all the while waiting until the banging stopped and the person went away. Turned out it was my neighbor according to what my husband told me. Now, if it was a neighbor why the heck would he do that? The banging didn't sound neighborly at all.
• United States
13 Feb 18
The neighbor must have been disgruntled about something before he began to knock. I only looked out because I wanted to see if I could recognize the vehicle. When I saw it was our local power company, I felt a lot better. I know sometimes people don't realize how loud they knock, but the guy knocked so loud! Had I not recognized the vehicle? I would have gone back down the hall, grabbed a golf club or baseball on the way, and called the police. Of course, after locking myself in my bedroom.

@lovebuglena I don't think that's weird at all. I wouldn't have looked out myself, but there was the opportunity to do so.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Normally, a person will not loudly bang on the door and non-stop unless maybe something is wrong and they desperately need help. I did not feel comfortable even looking out the window to see who it was that was so loud and persistent with the door knocking. My husband thought it was weird that I didn't even look out to see who it was.

That does sound nerve racking. Good thing it was a legit service and no hate was done. I typically never answer the door, its always a sales person or church people.

I won't answer the door for sales pitches or church people either! They do come around, but it's very rarely. Maybe once or twice a year.
