My late mother taught us to smell the aroma of food that has just been cooked. My mother was a great cook and by just smelling the aroma of the food we cooked, she told us what lacked or what were in excess of the food we were cooking. I think I have somehow mastered that skill but only for simple dishes that we normally eat everyday here at home. I have a congested nose and my sister asked me to taste the meatless dish she cooked for lunch. I told her the aroma of the food is just right- not salty, not sweet, just right. When I cook the same dish, more often than not, it is consumed in just a meal. There are no leftovers for the next meal. By the way the dish my sister prepared was sautéed salmon with vermicelli.

I can say from the aroma if a food is done correctly. My mom was not a great cook, my grandmother was.

i think we have to have a sharp sense of smell so we can check it out if what is being cooked is indeed good.

@ridingbet I have a sharp sense of smell, not only for cooking.

@LadyDuck that is good to know. i have also smelt the most odorous when i was in Kuwait, so my sense of smell is accustomed to odors that may be disgusting to others. so, if there is a person with BO i can somehow tolerate it in a few minutes, then i cover my nose.

That is a skill for a perfect cook. I can tell it by tasting it

indeed, tasting is still the best to know if a dish is cooked perfectly.

@ridingbet Yes. But if you have the skill of smelling and recognize, it is super one.

yes it was. for people with simple tastes of dishes, i consider this salmon with sotanghon very delicious and full of carbohydrates and protein.

that's a good substitute - salmon for pork. i had a relative who had asthma and allergies so she cooks by smell for her family.

really? does she have a congested nose as well? i believe the sense of smell helps us cook better food. i notice the chefs on TV about how they "smell the food that is being cooked by 'combing in' the smoke from the food to their nose'"

I, too, can judge how good a food will taste by its aroma. When I'm congested, I can't smell or taste anything.

@ridingbet My mother did the same. She told us that food would build up our strength. We had such wise mothers!

@DianneN i can attest to that. it is not good though to a certain user here who has a mother that does not care about and for her kids, and reading her discussions about her mother, makes me feel sorry for her.

another thing that i learned from my mother is, "even if i am sick and have no sense of taste or smell, i should eat so my body won't get more ill", and that is what we practice here. my brother is sick and he lost his appetite. my sister brought him some of the dish and told him to eat even though he has no appetite.

The aroma will definitely let you know if the meat is a bit off.
