Ok..it started with Anushka Sharma...Sharma in Hindi means "be shy". When I checked for funny surnames...at your end of the world... I couldn't believe "Gotobed" "Greedy" "Demon" "Nutters" How do they differentiate when they are told they are Demon when they are...

Really Funny Surnames. In modern times people have become increasingly embarrassed to hold 'funny' and unusual last names that may make other people laugh.

@vandana7 The first line says "many OLD surnames have disappeared".... this is may be the reason why I never heard them. Anyway I do not live in the UK.

Nicknames were common during the 19th C in France, because in the same family were often given the same first names to children. One that made me smile was a man whose family name would have been "Ewe" in English, and he was nicknamed "The Quail". Kind of sheep with feathers instead of wool.

@vandana7 They are usually not that funny in French. They have quite disappeared today, but they were things like "The Young", "The Old", or related to the work of the person. An exception was the army were they had all a nickname. I remember a soldier nicknamed "Vadeboncoeur", it would be something like "Cheerful Heart".

We have a surgeon in my town named Hacker, and though it is not a surname, the former Olympic champion skier Picabo (pronounced peekaboo) Street came to mind.
