London hosted a winter Lumiere (light) festival at the end of January which I had been hoping to go to. Famous landmarks throughout the city were lit up for three nights and the results were quite spectacular. It looks as if this is going to be an annual event so hopefully I will be able to attend next year but sadly because I had a detached retina the week before I was unable to see out of my left eye so could not attend. I had made arrangements with some friends to meet in London after work on the Friday so we could do a trek around the Capital to see these displays and then go to dinner somewhere. One very impressive photos is of the 1000 year old Westminster Abbey near the Houses of Parliament. A very beautiful building without the lighting but as you can see in the photo it is even more impressive lit up. There are some magnificent photos about this event. I have used one freely available on the internet hopefully next year I will be able to share my own photos. Fingers crossed for next January. One of the places I would love to go one January is the ice festival in Harbin, China where the make sculptures out of ice which are then lit up with colourful lights, When I say sculptures I am talking about life size buildings built of solid blocks of ice in a large park in the city centre. Mind you it is incredibly cold there so you would need to wear several layers of clothing.

I was discussing about the ice festival in Harbin with my husband just last evening while preparing dinner. I have seen incredible photos of this festival.

There are also some brilliant films on Youtube @LadyDuck I think it would be great to go and see that one year. It won't be next year because my wife wants to go to India in January but perhaps the year after who knows.

This photo is magical, it shows how good can be the illumination of a monument today. Hats off, it really works.

Sounds like the winter Lumiere (light) festival is held once a year.I cam imagine that it is a scene that regales the eye in which Famous landmarks are outlined by brilliant lights. To my shame,I have not been to the ice festival in Harbin so far, though I once passed Harbin.

@changjiangzhibin89 That would be a lovely surprise but you would need to wear very very warm clothes I understand it can get to -24C at worse but usually around -13C.

Harbin sounds a wonderful destination. They can do amazing things nowadays with laser lights and so forth.
