A bit too much rain for Broome, Western Australia

Cyclone Kelvin hit Western Australia’s coast recently and the beach resort of Broome got swamped with rain again. The town has now received a record rainfall of 1502 mls (59 inches) so far this year and it’s only February. The average annual rainfall is 615 mls (24 inches) and the lowest recorded rainfall was in 1992 when the town received 102 mls (4 inches) for the year. Broome is a popular tourist resort with Cable Beach offering 22kms of gleaming white sands fronting the Indian Ocean. Nearby, during low tide at Gantheaume Point, the red rocks reveal the tracks of dinosaurs. Broome is also famous for its pearls. Broome is on our list of ‘places to visit’ but I think we might try to miss the cyclone season. I know many of our American and Philippino friends regularly suffer cyclones but I think I’ll dodge them if I can. Are you one of those who go on ‘cyclone watch’ from time to time? The photo is of outback Australia.

We had 200 mm of rain in January in my area, it is 124% more than an average year, and this month is also very wet. I can hardly imagine what can be 1502 mm. OMG!

I'd be putting my floaties on! That is a huge amount of water in two months.

I have experienced a mini tornado right here at Solitaire. It did uproot trees and our water tank came down.

@allknowing Wow! That would have been quite a chore to get it all sorted and upright again.

Gosh, bringing down a water tank would make a mess.

What about in Melbourne, does it rain too like that? My sister-in-law and her family lives there. But there's no snow there as she told us. But it's so cold there, when my parents-in-law went there to visit her.

@JudyEv So, they have different weathers for each place in Australia. But generally, is it rainy?

The weather in Melbourne never seems to be the same two days in a row. Certainly they sometimes get a lot of rain and quite severe storms but nothing like this. Our elder son lives in Melbourne.

@SIMPLYD Do you mean Melbourne? Yes, Melbourne often gets rain but in summer can have some very hot days as well.

Beautiful picture. That's a lot of rain for one season. The most we get here is a tornado, and those are few and far between as Wisconsin isn't in tornado alley, there's a section of the US that gets many tornadoes every year, that area is generally known as tornado alley. Hurricanes never come inland, but stay on the coast.

@JudyEv That's usually the way it goes. Some areas get hit harder than others.

I've heard about the tornado alley and I knew some parts of the US are much more prone to tornadoes. There are a few hurricanes every year in our north. Some are worse than others.

We are only 30 kms from the coast but in Western Australia they are mostly only seen well to our north.

That's a beautiful place that you have shared in your picture. Well, weather can't be helped. We only have to avoid them as much as we can.

It's in that region but is actually the northern (I think) end of the Olgas, another fascinating rock formation not far from Uluru. Here's one of the Olgas and the big photo is the right-hand end.

I think excess rainfall is more welcome than the less . Of course normal will be ideal. I have not experienced severe weather like some go through regularly - siva

Certainly going through a drought is not to be wished for. We chose this area because there is always plenty of water here.
