It's time to leave this town! No, not Louisville (although my allergies are starting to say, "would you please leave?" about now), but this countdown of my favorite songs that have the word "town" in the title. Here's the best town I know of, in terms of songs. #1: Our Town - Iris DeMent If you ever watched Northern Exposure, the mid-90s CBS television series, this is the song they played during the final scene of the final episode. But I knew the song before that, thanks to a friend of mine in Nashville who asked to hitch a ride with me to City Stages in Birmingham so he could see Iris DeMent. I still owe him BIG TIME for introducing me to her music that night. Yeah, that's not a "pretty" voice. But it is REAL. And in that real, raw voice you can hear the creaking boards of the old general store in a dying town. It's bittersweet: "I'm leaving tomorrow but I don't wanna go, I love you, my town, you'll always live in my soul." Ironically, on the news today I heard about how a bill that would consolidate the 120 counties in Kentucky to fewer than 60. A lot of people have said goodbye to their town, too....here and everywhere. Thanks for reading. And here I thought you had gone all stagey with Thornton Wilder.

I think it's a good voice. Very real. I watched a lot of episodes of Northern Exposure (I recall the funny image of the pilot's boyfriend crushed by a falling satellite first), but I don't remember this song. I must have missed the last episode.

As one of the commenters said on You Tube, makes you remember when country was still good.
