I Hate Myself For Being Socially Awkward

I've always been told that I'm shy, but the past few years I feel like everything is getting a lot worse. I find it impossible to talk among large groups of people and even the thought of making eye contact with someone I know extremely well makes my stomach freak out. I've had several panic attacks at work lately where I've honestly thought I was dying. Walking down a busy street, I become so terrified I don’t know where to look, so I let my eyes lose focus and walk as fast as I can. Even among close friends I am becoming increasingly uncomfortable and often struggle to contribute to a conversation because I feel that I’ll say the wrong thing. I don't really know what I'm so afraid of but it really feels like the world will end if I make some kind of social gaffe.

I am sorry how you are feeling. Is there someone you can talk to about it that can help you feel better in your dealings with people.

Is there some kind of medication a doctor can prescribe for anxiety or a counselor might be able to help you overcome your problems. Once you find the problem you will be able to change it. Good luck to you

@houda28 I wish you luck in changing the way you feel, its lonely when you can't be around people feeling the way you do.

Some who steal the limelight are no better than those who feel insecure. I agree some tend to get more attention for some reason. I di not talk in a large gathering but do so when I feel the need to. No harm in being reserved but should have self confidence to be yourself. I am sure you can take a step towards improving on this aspect over time - siva

Those panic attacks can get worse and worse, because you are afraid that they will happen. There are many suggestions online how to help. Deep breathing is one, and grounding is another. I do not have a link right now to share with you, but I can understand how being here on myLot may help you at least feel connected to others without the fear so much.

I have some sort of struggle too with socializing when I'm in high school. It's really terrible. I hope you find a way to cope with your social anxiety

Do you feel better with small groups of friends. Maybe you just stick with that.

Could you have a talk with a psychoanalyst? They may be able to help you get over this.

You might be suffering from agoraphobia, which sounds very similar to what you are describing. I sometimes feel anxious and panicky in front of people, not anywhere as extreme as your attacks, and I know the frightening feeling. I feel sorry for you. Perhaps talking to a therapist could help. Good luck.

Oh don't worry about that. You are not alone in this world having that problem. I for one is an introvert who just love being alone, and with just a few chosen friends. Besides, you just have to be relaxed and comfortable with yourself and just accept yourself as who you are. I believe that people have different characteristic. I take for example, my brother who loves socializing and always being with so many people. He was born that way since we were young. And I was born this way being shy, timid and socially awkward. That's called human nature. But sooner or later you will learn to overcome it, believe me.
