This could only be Busselton, Western Australia

I’m myLotting in a hurry this morning as in a few hours we’re travelling down to Busselton on the west coast of Western Australia. We’re seeing old friends who used to play in a dance band with Vince. They had some tapes of the band playing and we’re now been able to put the tunes on a CD.
Busselton is a popular holiday resort and one of the places we’re thinking we might retire to one day. There were two wooden jetties (piers) there at one point but one was virtually destroyed during Cyclone Alby in 1978. However the remaining jetty is now the longest wooden jetty in the world, projecting 1841 metres (1.14 miles) out to sea. Trains would take goods, timber in particular, out to be laden onto ships. There is now an underwater observatory at the end of the pier.
A small train now takes tourists out to the end of the jetty if they don’t feel like walking. The jetty was popular with fishermen and at many points along the railings there are plaques dedicated to fishermen who have passed away. Many had a particular spot that they favoured.
The photo is of part of the jetty and the little buildings house a small shop and tourist information centre. Photos like this are a dime a dozen and the buildings are immediately recognisable as depicting Busselton.

@moffittjc As I said to MALUSE I can't imagine why it's there.

Look how calm and serene that water looks! Reminds me a lot of the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida.

@JudyEv Is the water very shallow there? Is that why they had to extend the length of the jetty so far out into the ocean?

@JudyEv Wow, that is very shallow! It sounds like the continental shelf extends out quite a distance under the ocean floor right there. It reminds me of the west coast of Florida, where the water is super shallow for miles off shore, because in ancient times it used to be part of the land.
On an interesting note, researchers this week found an ancient Native American burial ground on the shallow ocean floor offshore from the southwestern tip of Florida. They said it dates back 7000 years, when the ocean levels used to be much lower. The burial site was once a small lake on the land before its was swallowed up by the sea!

@moffittjc That's pretty amazing about the burial ground. In that case it's probably not the only one.

Truly a long pier! I am wondering how wide it is to accommodate all that and even a train.

@JudyEv The longest pier in California is about at half mile.

It used to be a full-sized steam goods train but now it is just a very small train to take people.

Thanks. The husband has really bad arthritis now and a very bad heart but we did enjoy our visit and talking over old times.

Enjoy your trip - that jetty looks fantastic. I'm happy Vince's band friends kept in touch and you were able to keep the music
