Bit of a Scare

We had a bit of a scare a few days ago. My husband had some growths removed from his face, chest and head at the hospital on Friday, with a skin graft being attached to the one on his head. The procedure went well, and we were home again by mid day. However, when he woke up on Saturday morning his pyjamas and bedding were soaked with blood from the wound on his chest. I rang the doctor and a nurse was sent round to assess the situation. She took the dressings off and fortunately everything looked fine underneath, so she just cleaned them up and put new dressings on. She came the next day, and though blood had again seeped through, there wasn't nearly so much of it, so she changed the dressings again. She is going to come every day until we have to go back to the hospital this Friday. We will find out then whether the growths were cancerous, and if so whether they got all the cancer out. Fingers crossed.

That is scary indeed. Imagine blood on the bedsheets every morning when you and your hubby awakens. I hope the growths are not cancerous. My prayer for your husband and for you to stay calm and positive.

I appreciate your kindness, thank you. The blood still seeps through the dressings, but it hasn't got on the bedclothes since that first day.

Thanks, but he's not feeling well at all I'm afraid, but he's a bit better than he was. We won't be surprised if it turns out to be skin cancer as he had a patch removed a couple of years ago.

@jaboUK Wishing for you that its not what you might think. I saw a guy with a great big bunch of black things on his fingers and I thought oh goodness that looks really bad and it was warts mere warts they said. Looked very scary to me though and I saw that on the Television here.

@lovinangelsinstead21 If it is skin cancer, it's one of the easiest cancers to treat. Anyway we'll just hope for the best.

Is there no way flow of blood can be stopped after a surgery? I can well imagine your anxiety. Hope this will soon pass off.

I suppose when my husband turns over in his sleep he inadvertently pulls on the stitches.Plus he's on blood thinners (for his heart) which I suppose makes it easier for the blood to seep past the stitches. Thanks for your good wishes Grace.

I hope that it's nothing serious, it was scary enough to have him bleeding so much during the night. My best wishes Janet.

@Tampa_girl7 That's good that your daddy's cancer is gone. My husband has had all sorts of treatment for his scalp - creams, freezing the spots etc, but they didn't work. So he's had them surgically removed and a skin graft put on. This is the wound that is hurting him most, but at least it's not bleeding.

@jaboUK my daddy had skin cancer on his scalp. They gave him some kind of cream to put on it and it worked. The cancer is gone.

To be honest Marilyn, he wasn't up to making the trip to hospital. He's 87 and not in good health at the best of times. When I first rang them they said to get him back to the hospital, but I said he wasn't well enough, hence we got the nurse. If he'd needed to be in the hospital she would have arranged for an ambulance, but thankfully that wasn't necessary. We've had excellent attention from the nurse, and it's a relief to me that she's coming every day.

Thanks Nanette. This has really knocked him out. As you know he's very frail anyway, and he's not sleeping or eating well. Your good wishes are very welcome.

Thanks Dianne. He's on blood thinners for his heart condition and that may be why the blood managed to seep through the dressings. The original dressing that they put on at the hospital was supposed to last for a week.

@jaboUK Blood thinners can do that. Hope he's calm and not worried too much. Same goes for you! Perhaps you can double up the dressings at bed time until he heals.

@DianneN I'm calm, him not so much. Though the blood is still coming through, it's not like that first day and it's not enough to get on the bedding. Thanks for your concern.

That is scary, hope it isn't anything bad. I had something on my face and when I would wipe too hard it would bleed and not stop. I went in and the doc said it was a spot all the veins had come together just under my skin. I had to have it burned out. First time didn't work so they had to do it deeper the second time. It was not cancerous so hopefully this is what is happening to him. I will cross my fingers and pray for good news.

He only has one skin graft (on the top of his head) and that's not the wound that is bleeding. That dressing is still in place, so we don't know how it's doing. Thanks for the warning about the top layer.

I don't think he does, but who knows when he's half asleep? He's on blood thinners for his heart condition, and I think that's contributing to the bleeding. It's still coming through the dressings, but not enough to soak the bedding.

Thanks Fiacre - yes it was frightening - I thought the wound must have come apart. When the nurse took off the dressing there was a perfectly meat row of stitches, and she wasn't overly concerned. The blood had just seeped through.

I am not well-aware of after care in such cases. Though, I know stitches do bleed a little for some time. The nurse checking on those regularly will ensure that infection doesn't set in. Hoping the tests on Friday are positive.
